Ten Myanmar crew members arrested after massive meth shipment intercepted near Bengkalis waters.

Indonesia has recorded one of its largest narcotics seizures after authorities intercepted 2.6 tonnes of liquid methamphetamine aboard a Tanzanian-flagged vessel near Bengkalis, Riau. The operation follows another major maritime drug interception in the Riau Islands earlier this month, intensifying concerns over trafficking routes near Singapore and Malaysia.

2.6 Tonnes of Meth Seized
Indonesia’s National Narcotics Agency (BNN), working with Customs officials, intercepted the vessel MV Rain Maker near Bengkalis in Riau province late on August 17, 2026. Authorities said the Tanzanian-flagged ship was operating under a fake name when it was stopped. The operation followed intelligence indicating that a vessel traveling from Sarawak, Malaysia, through the Andaman Sea could be transporting narcotics into Indonesia. Investigators subsequently located and inspected the suspected vessel.

Meth Hidden in Water Containers
During the search, authorities discovered approximately 2.6 tonnes of liquid methamphetamine concealed inside eight water barrels and a water tank. The massive quantity makes the interception one of Indonesia’s largest drug seizures. Sniffer dogs deployed during the inspection also detected more than 1.5 million illegal cigarettes aboard the vessel, adding another suspected smuggling offense to the investigation.

Ten Myanmar Crew Members Arrested
Authorities arrested 10 crew members, all Myanmar nationals, in connection with the shipment. Investigators are expected to examine the vessel’s movements, the origin and intended destination of the narcotics, and whether the operation is connected to a wider international trafficking network.

Second Major Regional Seizure in August
The August 17 interception was already the second Tanzanian-flagged vessel caught in the area this month. On August 8, Indonesian authorities seized 1.3 tonnes of ketamine from another vessel operating around the Riau Islands near Singapore, arresting seven Myanmar nationals and one Taiwanese national.

Indonesia Intensifies Anti-Drug Enforcement
Indonesia maintains some of the world’s toughest narcotics laws, including the possibility of capital punishment for drug trafficking, although the country has maintained a moratorium on executions for several years. Large maritime seizures nevertheless demonstrate the continuing challenge posed by international syndicates attempting to move narcotics through Southeast Asian waters.

The seizure of 2.6 tonnes of liquid methamphetamine near Bengkalis represents a major achievement for Indonesian authorities, but repeated maritime interceptions also reveal the scale of the regional trafficking challenge. For Indonesians, particularly communities around Riau and the Riau Islands, stronger maritime enforcement is critical to preventing narcotics from entering the country. For Singaporeans and Malaysians, the routes involved demonstrate why cross-border intelligence and maritime security cooperation remain essential across the Singapore Strait and surrounding waters.
