EMA warns households to brace for higher bills despite easing Middle East tensions

Singapore households are expected to face higher electricity bills from July as the Energy Market Authority (EMA) says elevated fuel costs from earlier geopolitical tensions continue to affect the energy market, despite recent diplomatic developments involving Iran.

Higher Tariffs Coming in Third Quarter
Singapore’s regulated electricity tariff is expected to increase in the third quarter of 2026, according to the Energy Market Authority. The increase will affect the majority of households still paying the regulated tariff, which currently stands at 29.72 cents per kilowatt-hour, inclusive of GST.

Fuel Prices Still Driving Costs
Despite recent diplomatic developments involving the United States and Iran, Singapore’s electricity prices are still being affected by elevated fuel costs recorded between April and mid-June. Since Singapore calculates tariffs based on previous-quarter fuel prices, the impact of earlier disruptions will only be fully reflected in the coming quarter.

Heavy Dependence on Imported Gas
Singapore generates about 95 percent of its electricity using imported natural gas, making it highly exposed to global fuel price movements. In 2025, a substantial share of Singapore’s gas imports came in the form of liquefied natural gas from international markets, while the remainder arrived via pipelines from neighboring countries.

Households Shift to Fixed Plans
As electricity prices remain volatile, some Singapore households are opting for fixed-price electricity contracts to reduce exposure to future price fluctuations. EMA data shows a gradual increase in the number of households locking in retail electricity plans, as consumers seek greater cost certainty amid rising utility bills.

Cost of Living Pressures Continue
The electricity hike adds another layer of pressure to Singapore’s cost-of-living concerns, especially for lower- and middle-income households. While government rebates such as U-Save will help offset some of the burden, analysts warn that energy inflation could continue affecting broader household expenses in the months ahead.

Singapore’s expected electricity tariff increase highlights the country’s vulnerability to global energy disruptions and the delayed impact of fuel market volatility. For Singaporeans and Indonesians watching regional economic trends, the rise serves as a reminder that geopolitical instability and energy dependence continue to shape daily living costs across Southeast Asia.
