Cases drop 66 per cent, but NEA urges residents to keep up source control as peak season begins.
Dengue infections in Singapore have fallen sharply in 2026, yet officials are warning the public not to let their guard down as the country moves into its traditional May–October peak season.
Dengue Cases Drop, But One Death Recorded
From January to May 15, 2026, Singapore recorded just over 600 dengue cases, a 66 per cent decrease compared with the same period in 2025, the National Environment Agency (NEA) said on May 16 at the launch of the National Dengue Prevention Campaign 2026 at Our Tampines Hub. One dengue death has been reported so far this year. While 2025 saw more than 4,000 cases—the lowest annual total since 2018—the highest number of dengue deaths in a single year remains 32 in 2020, followed by 25 in 2005, underscoring that low case counts do not eliminate severe outcomes.
Most Mosquito Breeding Still Found In Homes
NEA’s 2025 inspections—565,730 premises islandwide—uncovered 20,469 mosquito breeding habitats. In cluster areas that year, 65 per cent of Aedes breeding sites were in homes, 23 per cent in public areas, 4 per cent at construction sites and 8 per cent at other premises. Dengue clusters are defined as two or more cases with onset within 14 days and within 150 metres of each other. NEA took more than 9,800 enforcement actions in 2025, issued 810 fines and 37 stop-work orders to construction sites, and charged 73 contractors for repeat offences, highlighting the need for both household and corporate vigilance.
Fines And Enforcement To Support Behaviour Change
According to NEA, first-time residential offenders face a $200 composition sum if one breeding site is detected, rising to $300 for multiple sites or where a legal notice has already been served within a cluster. Construction sites face $3,000 fines for first offences and $5,000 for repeats. Senior Minister of State for Sustainability and the Environment Janil Puthucheary said the “relatively stable” dengue situation must not “lull us into complacency,” stressing that endemic dengue, low population immunity, all four circulating virus serotypes and Singapore’s role as a transport hub keep transmission risk high.
Project Wolbachia Expands, But Source Control Still Key
NEA’s Project Wolbachia, which releases male Aedes mosquitoes infected with Wolbachia bacteria to suppress wild populations, will cover more than 800,000 households by October. Between April and October, roll-out will progressively expand to Bukit Panjang, Little India, Pioneer, Toa Payoh and Ang Mo Kio. Studies show dengue risk is lowered by over 70 per cent at Project Wolbachia sites and by 45 per cent in adjacent areas. Dr Janil cautioned, however, that the technology is meant to complement—not replace—source reduction, saying that removing stagnant water remains “the most direct and effective way” to prevent breeding.
Climate Change Raises Long-Term Dengue Threat
NEA warned that Singapore’s tropical climate and high density already favour mosquitoes, and warmer temperatures can accelerate both mosquito development and virus multiplication. Dr Janil noted that climate change is bringing rising temperatures and unpredictable rainfall, shifts that are “already changing how diseases like dengue take hold and spread.” NEA urged residents to routinely remove breeding grounds by breaking up hardened soil, emptying flowerpot plates, overturning pails, changing water and keeping roof gutters clean, stressing that community action is still the strongest defence against mosquito-borne diseases.
Singapore’s sharp decline in dengue cases in early 2026 is encouraging, but the combination of endemic transmission, climate change and human behaviour means risk remains high as peak season begins. For Indonesians and Singaporeans, the experience underscores that even with innovative tools like Project Wolbachia, sustained household checks, firm enforcement and climate-aware planning are essential to keep dengue in check in dense, warming cities.
