Student Apps, Smart Future: AWS Credits Power Singapore’s AI Learning Push

New low-code platform access lets tertiary students prototype real apps while building AI fluency.

Singapore’s tertiary students can now use free Amazon Web Services credits to build working applications with minimal coding, adding momentum to nationwide efforts to make AI skills as common as language literacy.

Kiro Credits Open Low Code App Building
Students from polytechnics, universities and the Institute of Technical Education who are aged 18 and above and hold valid tertiary e mail addresses can receive 1,000 free credits to use Kiro, an AWS built development platform. Kiro lets users create applications by describing what they want in natural language, instead of writing full code. AWS said the credits are available for modules and courses that would benefit from Kiro, on an opt in basis where educators apply on behalf of their students. The initiative was unveiled at the AWS Singapore Summit at Marina Bay Sands on May 6.

Planning, Not Just Coding, Becomes The Lesson
Republic Polytechnic (RP) students have been early adopters, using Kiro for final year projects since April under a 2025 memorandum of understanding with AWS. RP senior lecturer William Tan said Kiro is used not just to speed up development but to teach students to think systematically. Rather than issuing vague prompts, a student building, for example, an interview-preparation app must specify goals, user workflows, target users, features and design elements such as login and profile pages, recording buttons and results dashboards. AWS Singapore public sector country manager Elsie Tan said students who plan in detail “build more efficiently, and get more out of every credit,” with 1,000 credits typically enough to reach a minimum viable product and a clear design blueprint for future maintenance.

Real Projects Show How AI Tools Shift Focus
One RP team used Kiro to build a platform that tracks and analyses the performance of education related projects worldwide, replacing manual report reading with an automated dashboard of which initiatives work and where improvements are needed. Business information systems student Balerie Lim said the system saves significant manpower hours and presents insights in a format policymakers can use to make better decisions. She added that, instead of spending most of their time on code, her team could prioritise dissecting the problem and designing the solution. Without Kiro, Tan said, it would have been difficult to move from proof of concept to a maintainable system within a typical 13 week project window.

Nationwide Push To Make AI Everyday
The Kiro pilot sits alongside a string of recent government and industry programmes designed to help Singaporeans “pick up AI like a language” through regular use. From the second half of 2026, Singaporeans who take selected SkillsFuture AI courses will receive six months’ free access to premium AI tools. Trade union NTUC members can already get up to 50 per cent subsidies on subscriptions to more than 20 AI products, including ChatGPT, Claude and GitHub Copilot. From August, all Nanyang Technological University undergraduates will gain full access to Google’s Gemini Enterprise for workplace automation and AI Studio for rapid app prototyping, while AI literacy modules will become mandatory for every NTU student, not just those in computing.

From Credits To Long Term Capability
AWS’ credit model and structured methodology are meant to nudge students into deeper thinking rather than one off experimentation. Each Kiro project leaves a clear record of requirements, design decisions and test criteria, creating an artefact that can be handed off to development teams or used as a learning reference. For Indonesians and Singaporeans, Singapore’s blend of free credits, tool access and compulsory AI literacy courses offers a glimpse of how education systems can move beyond coding drills to train students to frame problems, design solutions and work productively with AI, preparing them for workplaces where low code platforms and intelligent assistants are standard.

By giving students 1,000 free AWS Kiro credits and expanding access to premium AI tools across SkillsFuture, NTUC and NTU, Singapore is turning AI from a specialist subject into a hands on skill for everyday problem solving. For Indonesians and Singaporeans, these moves show how public–private partnerships can build a broader base of AI fluent workers who are comfortable turning ideas into usable apps, strengthening both individual career prospects and the region’s digital competitiveness.
