Ex-MPR speaker defends viral claims as free speech while minister brands them defamatory.

A viral video by Partai Ummat patron Amien Rais alleging an “unusual” relationship between President Prabowo Subianto and Cabinet Secretary Lt-Col Teddy Indra Wijaya has ignited a clash over free expression, defamation and digital regulation in Indonesia.

Amien Rais Defends Video As Democratic Expression
Speaking on the sidelines of Partai Ummat’s national congress in Yogyakarta on May 2, 2026, party patron and former People’s Consultative Assembly (MPR) speaker Amien Rais responded to backlash over a video he posted on his personal YouTube channel. The clip, now removed, discussed what he called a “special relationship” between President Prabowo Subianto and Cabinet Secretary Lt-Col Teddy Indra Wijaya. Amien argued the remarks should be viewed as an exercise of constitutionally protected free speech. “Democracy can only work well if freedom of expression guaranteed by our Constitution is not restricted or silenced,” he said, adding that Indonesia, as a democracy, must tolerate opinions even when they run counter to those in power or other groups.

Claims Of ‘Unusual’ Power Around Cabinet Secretary
In the video and his later comments, Amien claimed he had gathered information from YouTube and various social media channels that convinced him there was “something very unusual” about Teddy’s role. He alleged that Teddy wields “excessive power,” effectively controlling access to Prabowo by deciding which ministers, generals and guests can meet the president. Amien said one coordinating minister told him he had sometimes been unable to see Prabowo because Teddy said the president had “no time,” even though the minister believed Prabowo was at the palace and only needed five to ten minutes to report on his duties. Amien warned that such gatekeeping could become a “blunder” for Prabowo’s leadership if left unaddressed.

Call To Reassign Teddy Rather Than Punish Him
Despite his criticisms, Amien stopped short of calling for Teddy to be dismissed or punished. Instead, he suggested Prabowo should give Teddy another job away from the president’s side to avoid further stigma and reduce disruption to government. “Teddy is actually just the Cabinet Secretary, but acts as if he is the most authoritative,” Amien said, arguing that being constantly attached to Prabowo makes Teddy seem more powerful than his formal position. By moving him to a different role, Amien contended, Prabowo could ease public concerns about over-concentration of influence in the presidential inner circle without resorting to humiliation or scapegoating.

Meutya Hafid Condemns ‘Defamatory’ And Divisive Narrative
Minister for Communication and Digital Affairs Meutya Hafid sharply criticised Amien’s video, calling it defamatory and hateful. In a written statement on May 1, she said the content sought to “demean the dignity of the highest leader of the state” without factual basis and amounted to provocation designed to stir public unrest. Meutya warned that such narratives risk dividing society and stressed that the digital space should be a venue for exchanging ideas, not for producing hate content that attacks anyone’s dignity. She also indicated that those spreading the video could face legal consequences, though Amien later argued that only Teddy himself would have standing to bring the matter to court.

Legal Threats, Digital Governance And Free Speech Tensions
Amien responded coolly to Komdigi’s threat of legal action, saying legal experts had told him the ministry lacked authority to pursue a case against him directly. He maintained that if the dispute went to court, he would be “very confident” and would call several specialist doctors as witnesses, hinting at the nature of rumors surrounding Teddy without elaborating. The episode crystallises wider tensions in Indonesia between regulating online content, protecting leaders from baseless attacks and preserving democratic space for criticism. For Indonesians and Singaporeans, the controversy illustrates how quickly political speech can escalate into legal and regulatory battles in the age of viral clips, and how fragile the balance remains between safeguarding reputations and defending robust public debate.

The dispute over Amien Rais’ viral video and the alleged influence of Cabinet Secretary Teddy Indra Wijaya around President Prabowo Subianto lays bare Indonesia’s ongoing struggle to reconcile democratic free speech with demands to curb digital defamation and hate. For Indonesians, it raises questions about transparency and gatekeeping in the presidential inner circle; for Singaporeans observing regional politics, it highlights how social media amplifies elite disputes and how governments across South-east Asia are testing the line between legitimate regulation and overreach in the online sphere.
