Soaring energy prices and EV growth are pushing more landed and condo owners to tap rooftop solar.

Escalating fuel prices and higher electricity tariffs are accelerating interest in rooftop solar among Singapore households, turning a once niche green choice into a mainstream financial hedge and energy security strategy.

Surging Demand And War Driven Awareness
Solar firms report sharp increases in inquiries since the Middle East conflict began on February 28, as volatile fuel benchmarks pushed electricity tariffs up from April 1 and further hikes are expected in July. Sunollo says residential inquiries more than doubled since March 1, while FOMO Energy saw a 60 to 70 per cent rise and start up GetSolar says landed inquiries in March were twice those in February, as owners seek protection against bill shocks and look to power current or future electric vehicles.

Growth In Residential Solar Capacity
The Energy Market Authority notes that homes with solar panels jumped from 1,749 in 2021 to 6,912 in 2025, with installed capacity rising from 77.8 megawatt peak in December 2024 to 115.3 megawatt peak a year later, enough to power about 25,415 four room flats annually. EMA’s Violet Chen says payback periods can now be under five years due to steep falls in panel prices, and with systems lasting 20 years or more, many households effectively enjoy around 15 years of low cost electricity while helping Singapore decarbonise in a city that has limited options beyond rooftop solar.

Homeowner Economics And Real Savings
Recent adopters cite both the energy crisis and falling system costs as triggers to act: retired journalist Mathew Pereira cut his quoted system price from about $30,000 in 2020 to $19,000 for 35 panels installed in April 2026 and expects to break even in roughly 3½ years, based on savings and revenue from exporting surplus power. Other owners like Nicholas Neo and banking consultant Gemma Tay report using solar to lock in what they call “free energy,” halving household electricity bills even while charging EVs, with some exporting up to 70 per cent of generation back to the grid for credits under existing market schemes.

EV Ownership And Condo Constraints
Eigen Energy’s residential head Jotham Chan says more EV buyers are pairing home chargers with rooftop solar to offset rising pump prices, making the economics even more compelling for high consumption households. Some condominiums, including La Casa in Woodlands, are commissioning feasibility studies, though management councils face tight rooftop space and current rules that require 75 per cent special resolutions for common property installations, while fewer than 2 per cent of MCSTs have solar; the Building and Construction Authority is now exploring lower approval thresholds and third party models so condos can reduce common area electricity bills without tapping sinking funds.

National Targets And Collective Impact
Solar Energy Research Institute of Singapore deputy chief executive Thomas Reindl says Singapore’s land scarcity makes broad, small scale rooftop deployment critical, as every additional array contributes to net zero ambitions that require the power sector, which accounts for about 40 per cent of national emissions, to cut deeply by 2050. Industry leaders such as Sunollo and Solar Lab add that what once felt like a purely sustainability driven purchase is increasingly a rational household financial decision that raises energy security, with the Middle East conflict pushing fence sitters to confirm orders faster than in previous years.

The rapid growth of rooftop solar on Singapore homes shows how global fuel shocks, EV uptake and falling panel costs can shift consumer behaviour toward decentralised clean energy. For Indonesians, this offers a glimpse of how urban households can supplement grids and hedge against imported energy volatility through rooftop generation and clearer condo rules; for Singaporeans, it underscores that personal investments in solar, alongside national moves into hydrogen and other low carbon sources, will be crucial in strengthening energy security and meeting net zero goals in a highly trade dependent city state.
