Melaka police say influencer-level suspect faces court after toddler found semi-conscious with THC in system.

A 39-year-old Malaysian man is expected in court over allegations that a three-year-old girl was exposed to drug-laced sweets and hospitalised in a semi-conscious state in Melaka.

Suspect To Be Charged After Completed Investigation
Melaka police chief Datuk Dzulkhairi Mukhtar said investigators have finished their work and received instructions from the deputy public prosecutor to charge the 39-year-old suspect in court. The case surfaced after the child was admitted to Melaka Hospital in a semi-conscious state on April 14. The man, who reportedly has a substantial online following, was arrested on April 15 and has been under remand while police completed inquiries into how the girl came into contact with the sweets.

THC Found After Child Rushed To Hospital
Initial findings indicate the girl is believed to have consumed sweets kept in a refrigerator at a relative’s home in Sungai Putat, where she was under care. Shortly afterwards, she lost consciousness and was rushed for emergency treatment. Medical tests later detected Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), the psychoactive compound in cannabis, in her system, confirming drug exposure. The girl has since recovered and been discharged from hospital, but the positive THC test triggered a full criminal investigation.

Sweets Allegedly Purchased Abroad And Missing
Police say the sweets were allegedly bought overseas by the suspect and later stored at the relative’s home. However, during searches of the premises, officers did not recover the sweets themselves, complicating efforts to obtain direct physical evidence. Despite this, investigators proceeded based on medical results, witness accounts and other circumstantial information surrounding the child’s access to the treats and subsequent collapse.

Clean Record But Case Taken Seriously
Datuk Dzulkhairi confirmed the suspect has no prior criminal record and tested negative for drugs when detained. Even so, authorities are treating the case as a serious child endangerment incident because of the girl’s age and the nature of the substance involved. The investigation was handled by the Sexual, Women and Children Investigation Division (D11), which specialises in offences affecting vulnerable groups, before being referred to prosecutors for charging decisions.

Broader Concerns Over Edible Drug Products
The case has heightened concern in Malaysia and the region about the risks of drug-infused edibles, especially when stored in homes where children are present. Products that resemble ordinary sweets or snacks can easily be accessed by toddlers who have no way of knowing they are dangerous. For Indonesians and Singaporeans as well, the incident underlines the importance of strict controls on cannabis-derived products, clear labelling, and careful storage practices to prevent accidental poisoning among young children.

The expected court charges in Melaka over a three-year-old’s exposure to drug-laced sweets underscore how potent cannabis compounds in edible form can endanger children even without direct drug use by adults. For Indonesians and Singaporeans, the case is a reminder that evolving drug trends, including edibles bought abroad, demand strong parental vigilance, clear laws and specialised child-protection policing to prevent similar scares across the region.
