University expands AI literacy to every undergraduate as it prepares students for an AI-driven workforce

Nanyang Technological University is making artificial intelligence a core part of student learning, moving beyond computing courses to ensure every undergraduate can use AI tools confidently, critically, and responsibly.

NTU Will Make AI Literacy Mandatory For All Students
From August, Nanyang Technological University will make AI literacy lessons compulsory for all students, expanding access far beyond computing courses. The lessons, currently taught only to computing students, will be integrated into the first-year core module Science and Technology for Humanity, giving every undergraduate a foundation in how AI tools work, how they can be applied, and how to use them ethically across different disciplines.

Students Will Receive Premium AI Tools And Practical Access
As part of the rollout, NTU students will get free access to premium Google AI tools including Gemini Enterprise, AI Studio, and Vertex AI. University leaders said this will help level the playing field by removing the cost barrier that prevents some students from experimenting with advanced AI systems. The initiative was partly driven by students themselves, who highlighted an AI divide between those who could afford subscriptions and those who could not, as well as between students who already knew how to build AI agents and those who had never tried.

The Goal Is To Help Students Build Useful AI Agents
NTU wants students to move beyond passive use of chatbots and learn how to create simple AI agents that solve real problems. One example is Caleb Yung, a 25-year-old computer and data science student who built a Telegram-based AI assistant that manages his schedule, adds events, and helps with study planning. He said the value of such tools lies not in being revolutionary, but in reducing mental load and handling repetitive tasks so students can focus on more important responsibilities.

AI Will Be Embedded Across Teaching And Assessment
The broader push goes beyond one course. NTU aims to integrate AI into 40 percent of courses across all 52 undergraduate programs by 2030, up from just 5 percent today outside computing-specific degrees. The university said students will use AI tools designed by educators for specific learning outcomes, while platforms like NALA, NTU’s AI learning assistant, will allow lecturers to build course-specific AI tutors that can provide immediate and tailored support based on class materials.

NTU Says Ethics And Control Will Remain Central
University leaders stressed that AI will remain a tool, not a substitute for judgment, and that students must learn to use it critically and responsibly. NTU said it has assessed risks including data security and misuse, and chose to work with large providers like Google because of their stronger infrastructure and security controls. At the same time, some exams will remain offline, and lecturers will still be able to allow or prohibit AI use in class, showing that the university wants students to gain practical AI skills without losing sight of ethics, discipline, and independent thinking.

NTU’s decision to make AI literacy universal reflects how quickly artificial intelligence is becoming a basic skill rather than a specialist advantage. For Singaporeans, the move signals a new phase in higher education where AI competence is treated as essential workforce preparation. For Indonesians and Singaporeans alike, it also highlights a wider shift in education across the region, where universities are under pressure not only to teach technology, but to ensure students can use it responsibly and effectively in the real world.
