Temporary aid aims to keep fares stable for school, care, and medical transport users

Singapore will provide temporary support to selected transport service providers from April to June 2026 to help offset rising fuel costs and maintain essential transport services, as higher energy prices linked to the Middle East conflict continue to pressure operating expenses.

Three-Month Support Window Announced
The temporary support will run from April to June and applies to government-contracted or subsidized transport service providers. These operators will receive support equivalent to 13 percent of transport fare revenue during the three-month period, with the expectation that they keep fares stable for now.

School Bus Operators Are Included
For the school bus sector, the Ministry of Education will support operators serving primary schools and special education schools. The move is meant to give parents and caregivers more time to adjust transport arrangements if fuel prices remain elevated and fare increases become necessary after June. MOE’s existing financial assistance for eligible students also remains in place.

Disability Service Transport Will Also Receive Help
The Ministry of Social and Family Development will support social service agencies providing MSF-funded disability services that rely on transport arrangements, including Day Activity Centres and Sheltered Workshops. These agencies will be required to pass the grant support on to their contracted transport operators.

Support Extends to Seniors and Patients
The Ministry of Health will also provide support to long-term care and community dialysis service providers offering regular transport services for seniors and patients. This includes senior care centres, medical escort and transport operators, day hospices, and community dialysis centres. The government says affordability safeguards for care users will remain in place, and long-term care subsidies are already scheduled to be enhanced from July 2026.

A Short-Term Cushion, Not a Permanent Fix
The support is designed as a near-term buffer while fuel prices remain volatile. The ministries indicated that if fuel prices stay high beyond June, transport fares may still need to rise later. This comes as the government has also rolled out broader targeted support for businesses and households facing higher energy and logistics costs from the same global shock.

This temporary transport support shows that Singapore is trying to protect essential daily services before higher fuel costs are passed directly to families, seniors, patients, and persons with disabilities. For Singaporeans, the measure offers a short-term buffer at a time when broader inflation pressures remain a concern. For Indonesians watching the region, it reflects how rising global energy costs are pushing governments to step in selectively to preserve essential public-facing services without fully freezing future price adjustments.
