Public caning highlights strict enforcement of syariah law in Indonesia’s only province applying it

A public caning in Aceh has once again drawn attention to the province’s strict enforcement of syariah law, as a couple was punished for engaging in sex outside marriage.

Couple Receives 100 Lashes Each
An Indonesian couple was publicly flogged with 100 lashes each on April 7 in Banda Aceh after being found guilty of having sex outside marriage. The punishment took place in a public park, where dozens of onlookers gathered to witness the caning, according to an AFP reporter at the scene. The identities and ages of the couple were not disclosed.

Public Caning Remains Part Of Local Law Enforcement
Aceh is the only region in Indonesia that enforces a version of syariah law, under which sexual relations between unmarried individuals are strictly prohibited. Local prosecutor’s office official Rajesh Kana stated that such punishments are carried out as part of the province’s legal obligations whenever violations occur.

Multiple Offenders Punished In Same Session
The couple were among six individuals punished on the same day. Four others received between eight and 29 lashes for offenses including physical contact with a member of the opposite sex and alcohol consumption. One woman, who was sentenced to 27 lashes, fainted during the final stroke and required medical attention from paramedics on site.

Strict Laws Continue To Draw Public Attention
Caning remains widely supported in Aceh as a method of enforcing moral and religious codes. The punishment applies to a range of offenses, including gambling and same-sex relations. Earlier in January, another unmarried couple received 140 lashes each, marking one of the harshest penalties since syariah law was formally implemented in the province in 2015.

Aceh’s Unique Legal System Within Indonesia
While Indonesia is the world’s largest Muslim-majority country, Aceh holds special autonomy that allows it to enforce Islamic law more strictly than other regions. The country as a whole officially recognizes multiple religions and belief systems, but Aceh’s legal framework continues to stand out for its distinctive approach to morality-based offenses.

The latest public caning in Aceh underscores ongoing differences in legal systems within Indonesia and raises continued debate around enforcement, cultural values, and human rights. For Indonesians, it reflects the province’s unique autonomy and strong adherence to religious law. For Singaporeans and regional observers, it highlights how legal and cultural frameworks can vary significantly across Southeast Asia, even within the same country.
