Experts urge faster weather access and drought-resistant farming before impacts deepen

Indonesia is once again facing climate anxiety as warnings over a possible “Godzilla El Nino” raise fresh concerns about drought, crop losses, and pressure on national food supplies.

What “Godzilla El Nino” Really Means

The term “Godzilla El Nino” has returned to public discussion as scientists warn about the risk of an extremely strong El Nino event. According to BMKG’s scientific explanation, El Nino refers to the warming of sea surface temperatures in the central and eastern Pacific Ocean beyond normal levels. This shift affects winds, clouds, and rainfall patterns across many parts of the world, including Indonesia.

The phrase itself does not describe a new type of El Nino. Instead, it refers to a super-strong El Nino with unusually high sea temperature anomalies and broader climate impacts than a typical event. The nickname was first introduced in 2015 by NASA scientist Bill Patzert to describe one of the most powerful El Nino episodes recorded since 1950.

Why Indonesia Is Vulnerable

For Indonesia, the danger lies in lower rainfall, longer dry seasons, and more severe water stress. These conditions can disrupt agriculture, reduce water availability, and heighten the risk of forest and land fires. Previous El Nino periods have already shown how quickly extreme dryness can spread across multiple provinces and affect both farmers and food supply chains.

UGM Agroclimatology professor Bayu Dwi Apri Nugroho said El Nino is a natural climate cycle, but global climate change has made its pattern more dynamic and harder to predict. He warned that when the intensity becomes very strong, the impact is immediately felt in food production, especially in sectors that depend heavily on stable water supply.

Agriculture Faces the Sharpest Blow

Bayu said agriculture is among the sectors most exposed to a powerful El Nino, particularly crops such as rice and corn that require significant amounts of water. If prolonged drought hits planting areas, reduced water supply could slow crop growth, lower yields, and in severe cases trigger crop failure.

He stressed that one of the most urgent needs is accurate and accessible weather information down to the village level. With better forecasts, farmers can decide when to plant, what commodities to prioritize, and how to adjust cultivation patterns before drought conditions worsen. In extreme weather situations, this kind of local level climate information can make the difference between adaptation and heavy losses.

Adaptation Must Reach the Field

Bayu also highlighted the importance of drought-resistant crop varieties, which have already been developed but need to be used more widely. He said these varieties can help reduce losses if water shortages intensify during the planting season. In addition, water-saving irrigation systems and pump-based water support were identified as practical technical responses for dry conditions.

Still, technology alone will not be enough. Bayu emphasized that agricultural extension officers play a critical role in making sure farmers understand and apply the right information. Clear communication between farmers and field advisers, he said, is essential so that decisions are based on real conditions rather than uncertainty.

Government Says Mitigation Is Underway

The National Food Agency, or Bapanas, said it has already prepared anticipatory steps to deal with the possible impact of El Nino. Deputy for Food Availability and Stabilization I Gusti Ketut Astawa stated that the government has been distributing fertilizer and working to expand planting areas in recent months as part of its mitigation strategy.

Ketut said the government is relying on lessons learned from the 2023 to 2024 El Nino period. Based on that experience, officials believe this year’s threat can be handled through earlier mitigation and better anticipation. That response suggests the government is trying to move before supply disruptions become more severe.

A Climate Warning With Broader Consequences

The growing attention around “Godzilla El Nino” reflects more than weather anxiety. It signals concern over how climate extremes can ripple into food prices, rural livelihoods, and national resilience. A strong El Nino would not only test farms and water systems, but also the speed and coordination of Indonesia’s climate response.

Indonesia’s challenge is no longer simply understanding what El Nino is, but responding early enough to reduce the damage. Accurate weather information, stronger field support, drought-resistant crops, and practical water management will be central to protecting food production in the months ahead. This matters deeply for Indonesians because food security and farmer livelihoods are directly on the line. It also matters for Singaporeans, as climate-related supply disruptions in Indonesia can influence regional trade flows, food costs, and broader economic stability across the neighborhood.
