Held at Harris Resort Barelang, the programme brought together 13 women from Tanjung Uma for a day of financial literacy and practical skills development

A focused afternoon in Barelang brought together purpose, learning, and community spirit. On 8 March 2026, BatamOn Asia, in collaboration with Harris Resort Barelang, marked International Women’s Day through a Women Empowerment programme designed to equip women from Tanjung Uma with practical life skills. More than a symbolic celebration, the initiative reflected a growing shift toward grassroots empowerment that directly impacts families and communities.

BatamOn Asia operates as a business and talent solutions company based in Batam, Indonesia. Positioned as a “global-ready talent hub,” it supports companies—particularly in Singapore—by providing access to skilled, cost-efficient talent alongside operational infrastructure. Running parallel to its commercial activities is the Tanjung Uma Empowerment Program (TUEP), a long-term social initiative that focuses on education, environmental sustainability, and economic empowerment within the coastal community of Tanjung Uma. This dual approach reflects a broader development model where economic growth is closely tied to community resilience and inclusion.

The Women Empowerment programme, held from 2.00 to 5.30 PM at Harris Resort Barelang, gathered 13 participants from the Tanjung Uma community. The event combined education with hands-on learning, creating a space where women could directly apply new knowledge. Designed as part of a monthly initiative, the programme aims to support women in becoming independent, empowered, and healthy individuals who play a vital role in shaping families and society. According to UN Women, empowering women contributes significantly to economic growth and social stability, particularly in developing communities.

The session began with a household finance seminar that introduced simple and practical budgeting methods. Participants were guided on how to manage income, control expenses, and plan for future needs using straightforward approaches that can be applied in daily life. Financial literacy remains a key factor in improving household resilience, with the World Bank highlighting that access to financial knowledge enables families to better withstand economic shocks. For many participants, this was their first structured exposure to financial planning concepts, making the session both impactful and immediately relevant.

Following the seminar, the programme transitioned into a hands-on cooking activity where participants prepared sandwiches together. This session was designed not just as a culinary exercise but as a practical demonstration of how to create healthy, affordable meals using simple ingredients. The activity reinforced the idea that nutrition and cost efficiency can go hand in hand. By focusing on accessible recipes, the programme encouraged participants to adopt healthier eating habits without increasing household expenses, aligning with broader public health recommendations on balanced diets.

The programme’s structure reflects BatamOn Asia’s integrated approach to development through TUEP. Rather than offering one-off activities, the initiative is part of a sustained effort to address structural challenges in Tanjung Uma. These challenges include limited access to education, economic opportunities, and environmental sustainability practices. TUEP’s broader initiatives—ranging from English classes and vocational training to coastal clean-ups and waste management education—are designed to create long-term impact. This aligns with global best practices in community development, which emphasize continuous engagement and capacity building rather than short-term interventions.

The collaboration with Harris Resort Barelang also highlights the importance of cross-sector partnerships in driving social impact. By providing a supportive venue and environment, the resort contributed to making the programme both accessible and engaging. Such partnerships demonstrate how private sector involvement can amplify community initiatives, creating shared value for businesses and local communities. For participants, the setting offered a refreshing and motivating atmosphere that enhanced the overall learning experience.

Initiatives like this Women Empowerment programme demonstrate how targeted, practical interventions can create meaningful change at the community level. By equipping women with financial knowledge and everyday life skills, the programme strengthens the foundation of family well-being in Tanjung Uma. It also reflects a broader model where economic ambition and social responsibility move together. Visitors and observers looking at Batam’s development can see a city that is not only positioning itself as a regional talent hub but also investing in inclusive growth. This balance makes Batam an increasingly relevant example of how local empowerment can support sustainable regional progress.
