Government intensifies market oversight to keep food prices stable during festive season

Malaysia’s government is stepping up price monitoring ahead of Ramadan and Syawal as rising demand for food and essential goods raises concerns about affordability for households across the country.

Government Orders Stronger Price Controls
Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has instructed authorities to intensify monitoring of essential goods and food prices during Ramadan and the upcoming Syawal celebrations. The directive aims to prevent excessive price increases as consumer demand rises during the festive period.

Senior press secretary Tunku Nashrul Abaidah said the prime minister emphasized that the availability of daily necessities and price stability must be guaranteed nationwide.

Demand Surge During Festive Season
Ramadan and Syawal traditionally see a significant increase in demand for food and household items as families prepare for fasting and festive gatherings.

According to Tunku Nashrul, Anwar stressed that this seasonal demand must not lead to supply shortages or unreasonable price hikes that could burden consumers.

Ops Pantau 2026 Monitoring Initiative
The prime minister has directed the Ministry of Domestic Trade and Cost of Living to strengthen enforcement through Ops Pantau 2026. The initiative involves continuous inspections to ensure traders comply with price regulations.

Authorities are expected to closely monitor markets and retail outlets across the country to detect any attempts at profiteering.

Oversight of Ramadan Bazaars
Special attention will also be given to food prices at Ramadan bazaars, which are popular evening markets during the fasting month.

The government wants prices to remain reasonable and accessible while ensuring that stalls meet proper hygiene standards set by local authorities.

Rahmah Madani Programme Continues
To further ease the cost of living, the Rahmah Madani sales programme will continue throughout Ramadan. The initiative allows consumers to purchase essential goods at reduced prices.

Officials say the programme reflects the government’s commitment to ensuring that Ramadan and Syawal celebrations remain meaningful without placing excessive financial strain on Malaysian households.

Malaysia’s tighter price monitoring ahead of Ramadan highlights the government’s efforts to balance festive demand with economic stability. Ensuring fair prices and adequate supply will be critical in maintaining consumer confidence and protecting household spending during one of the busiest periods of the year. For regional observers, including Singapore and Indonesia, the move underscores how governments are responding to rising cost-of-living pressures across Southeast Asia.
