Indonesia signals readiness for diplomacy amid escalating Middle East conflict
President Prabowo Subianto has expressed readiness to travel to Tehran to facilitate dialogue between Iran and the United States, as tensions in the Middle East intensify.
Indonesia Offers Mediation
Indonesia’s Foreign Ministry said President Prabowo Subianto is prepared to facilitate dialogue aimed at restoring security and reducing escalation in the Middle East. If both parties agree, he is willing to travel to Tehran to conduct mediation.
The ministry reiterated Indonesia’s call for restraint, respect for sovereignty and peaceful dispute resolution, in line with its long-standing “free and active” foreign policy doctrine.
Concern Over Failed Talks
Jakarta expressed regret over the breakdown of indirect negotiations between Washington and Tehran, which had been mediated by Oman. Three rounds of talks were previously held in Muscat and Geneva focusing on Iran’s uranium enrichment and sanctions relief.
The ministry warned that rising tensions risk undermining regional stability as well as broader global peace and security.
Iran Welcomes Indonesia’s Role
Iran’s embassy in Jakarta welcomed President Prabowo’s readiness to mediate. In a statement, the embassy acknowledged Indonesia’s diplomatic initiative amid the escalating conflict.
The mission also urged Indonesian officials to take a firm stance in condemning what it described as aggression by the United States and Israel.
Escalation After Air Strikes
The mediation offer follows waves of US and Israeli air strikes against targets in Iran, which prompted retaliation from Tehran. Iranian state television confirmed the death of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei hours after US President Donald Trump publicly stated he had been killed.
Washington has warned of further action if Iran responds militarily, raising fears of broader confrontation across the region.
Safety Advisory for Indonesians
Indonesia’s government has urged its citizens in affected areas to remain calm, follow instructions from local authorities and maintain communication with Indonesian representatives abroad.
Officials said Jakarta remains committed to playing an active role in preserving global stability while ensuring the safety of Indonesians overseas.
Prabowo’s mediation offer signals Indonesia’s intent to assert a constructive diplomatic role amid growing Middle East instability. Whether the initiative gains traction will depend on both Washington and Tehran’s willingness to return to the negotiating table.
