Police say suspect and friends allegedly extorted victim and damaged vehicle
A dramatic roadside altercation in Johor has led to the arrest of a man who allegedly clung to his ex-wife’s moving car before falling onto the road.
Altercation Turns Dangerous
The incident occurred in the Seri Alam area at about 3.50pm, according to Seri Alam district police chief Mohd Sohaimi Ishak. Police said the confrontation began after the man allegedly argued with his ex-wife at a supermarket in Bandar Seri Alam.
A video circulating online showed the man clinging to the exterior of a blue car as it moved along a public road. He later lost his grip and fell onto the asphalt while the vehicle continued forward.
Two-Kilometre Standoff
Police said the man climbed onto the hood and clung to the front of the car as the woman drove slowly for about 2km. The situation escalated when several men, believed to be his friends, allegedly arrived and blocked the vehicle.
The group is accused of extorting the woman, seizing her belongings and smashing her car windows before fleeing the scene.
Arrest and Drug Test Results
Acting on a tip-off, police arrested the suspect at about 2am on March 1 in Masai, Johor Bahru. He has no prior criminal record but tested positive for ketamine.
The man is currently remanded for seven days to assist with investigations, police said in a Facebook statement released on March 1.
Possible Legal Consequences
If found guilty of consuming ketamine, he could face up to two years’ jail, a fine of up to RM5,000, or both. Authorities are also investigating allegations of extortion and property damage.
Extortion carries a potential jail term of up to 10 years, along with possible fines or caning. Mischief causing damage to property may result in up to two years’ imprisonment, a fine, or both.
Ongoing Investigations
Police are continuing investigations into the involvement of the other men seen in the incident. Authorities have not disclosed further details on the extent of the victim’s losses.
The case has drawn public attention after footage of the roadside drama was widely shared on social media platforms.
The incident highlights how personal disputes can quickly escalate into dangerous public confrontations. With multiple offences under investigation, authorities are expected to take firm action as the case proceeds.
