Jakarta monitoring developments as 19% tariff trade deal remains in force

President Prabowo Subianto said Indonesia is prepared for all possibilities after the US Supreme Court rejected President Donald Trump’s global tariffs, even as a newly signed bilateral trade deal remains intact.

Prabowo Responds To US Court Decision
Speaking on Feb 21, Prabowo said his government respects the domestic political process in the United States and will closely monitor developments following the US Supreme Court’s rejection of President Donald Trump’s global tariffs.

“We are prepared for all possibilities. We respect the domestic politics of the United States, and we will monitor the developments,” Prabowo said in a video statement.

He was in Washington DC this week alongside several ministers.

Trade Deal Cuts Tariffs To 19%
During the visit, Prabowo attended the inaugural meeting of Trump’s Board of Peace and held a bilateral meeting with the US president.

Indonesia and the United States signed a trade agreement reducing tariff rates on Indonesian exports to 19 per cent, down from 32 per cent.

The agreement is aimed at strengthening trade flows between the two countries.

Indonesia Seeks Tariff Exemptions
Separately, Indonesia’s chief negotiator for US tariffs, Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs Airlangga Hartarto, said the government has requested that the US maintain previously agreed tariff exemptions.

These exemptions cover key Indonesian exports, including palm oil, coffee and cocoa.

Airlangga noted that the newly signed trade deal remains valid despite recent developments in the US.

Different Treatment For Deal Partners
Airlangga added that countries which have signed trade agreements with Washington may receive different treatment compared to others.

He emphasised that Friday’s trade deal between Indonesia and the US is still in force.

Assess Potential Implications
The government continues to assess potential implications while maintaining diplomatic engagement with US authorities.

Indonesia is keeping a close watch on US policy shifts while safeguarding its trade interests through the newly signed agreement. As global trade dynamics evolve, Jakarta’s readiness to navigate uncertainties signals a pragmatic approach to protecting export sectors and maintaining bilateral economic ties.
