The incident occurred at about 12:30am on Feb 17 in Segamat, Johor.

According to Segamat district police chief Superintendent Mohd Jumazanzahir Chek Ismail, the man in his 30s was believed to have been handling a firework known as “shoot cake 4D 16 shot premium” in front of his house during Chinese New Year celebrations.

Severe Injury Confirmed

Medical officers later confirmed that he underwent a below-the-knee amputation of his left leg. He is currently reported to be in stable condition.

These provisions cover offences related to causing explosions that endanger life and possession of explosive materials.

Potential Legal Consequences

Under Malaysian law, offenders may face imprisonment of up to seven years, a fine of up to RM10,000, approximately S$3,200, or both.

Authorities have not disclosed whether the fireworks involved were legally purchased or properly licensed.

Public Safety Advisory Issued
Superintendent Mohd Jumazanzahir urged the public to use only approved fireworks and to operate them in open spaces while observing strict safety measures.

He warned that misuse of fireworks can result in serious injuries and legal action.
