Authorities investigate adult suspect as child protection agencies urge vigilance

A suspected sexual abuse case involving a junior high school student in Bengkong, Batam, has triggered a police investigation and renewed calls for stronger child protection measures.

Alleged Abuse Involving Junior High Student
Authorities are investigating allegations of sexual abuse involving a male junior high school student in Bengkong, Batam. Information gathered from within the school community suggests the suspect is an adult man who works in a neighboring country.

The suspect, identified by initials HA, also known as R, is estimated to be between 30 and 40 years old. His nationality has not been confirmed.

Police Confirm Ongoing Investigation
Barelang Police Chief Kombes Pol. Anggoro Wicaksono confirmed on Feb 11 that the case is under active investigation. “The report is being examined in depth. The suspect and the possibility of other victims are still being investigated,” he said at the Barelang Police Headquarters.

Police stated that the reported case involves alleged same-sex abuse committed by an adult against a minor. Investigators are working to establish the full sequence of events and determine the exact locations involved.

Incident Believed To Have Occurred Outside School
Preliminary findings indicate that the alleged abuse may have taken place outside the school environment. Despite this, authorities are treating the matter as a priority due to the involvement of a minor.

So far, only one victim has officially filed a police report. However, investigators are exploring the possibility that additional victims may exist.

Allegations Of Luring With Incentives
Emerging information suggests that the suspect may have had direct contact with the victim and allegedly used money or goods as incentives to approach the child.

Police have not ruled out the possibility of multiple victims and emphasized that the investigation will be conducted thoroughly to prevent further harm.

Child Protection Agencies Step In
The Head of Batam’s Women’s Empowerment and Child Protection Agency, Novi Harmadyastuti, confirmed that her office is monitoring the case closely.

She urged parents and schools to intensify supervision of children’s activities both at school and at home. Strengthening awareness and communication, she said, is essential to prevent sexual violence against minors.

Call For Community Vigilance

Police have called on parents and educational institutions to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity involving children. “We ask parents and schools to be more alert. Monitor children’s activities to avoid unwanted incidents,” Anggoro said.

The case highlights the need for coordinated efforts among families, schools, and law enforcement to break the cycle of child predation and ensure swift legal action when crimes occur.

The Bengkong case underscores the ongoing challenges of protecting minors from sexual exploitation. While investigations continue, authorities and child protection agencies stress that prevention requires active cooperation from families, schools, and the wider community. For Indonesians and Singaporeans monitoring regional child safety issues, the incident serves as a stark reminder that vigilance and early reporting are critical to safeguarding children.
