Random late-night attack sparks fear as police arrest suspect within hours
A routine evening outing turned into a moment of sheer terror when an unsuspecting shopper was forced to flee for her life, raising renewed concerns over public safety in crowded urban spaces.
Random Attack at Mall Parking Bay
A 21-year-old female university student was chased by a knife-wielding man at a shopping mall parking bay in Taman Lagenda, Melaka, in what police described as a random and unprovoked attack. The incident occurred at approximately 9.30pm on Feb 7, catching the victim completely off guard.
Suspect Behaved Aggressively
Melaka Tengah police chief Assistant Commissioner Christopher Patit said the 50-year-old local suspect suddenly shouted profanities and hurled verbal abuse at the victim before brandishing a knife. The suspect then chased the student, causing immediate fear and panic in the public area.
Victim Escaped With Younger Sister
The victim, who was accompanied by her 16-year-old sister, managed to flee into the shopping mall to seek safety. Their escape was aided when the suspect reportedly fell during the pursuit and was unable to continue chasing them. Both sisters escaped without physical injuries.
No Prior Connection Between Victim and Suspect
Police investigations confirmed that the victim did not know the suspect and had never encountered him before. Authorities emphasized that there was no prior relationship, interaction, or dispute between the two parties, reinforcing the random nature of the attack.
Arrest Made After Police Report
Following the incident, the victim lodged a police report in the early hours of Feb 8. Acting swiftly, police arrested the suspect later that same day. The man was identified as a resident of Kelemak, Alor Gajah, and remains under investigation.
Authorities Reassure the Public
ACP Patit said police are treating the matter seriously and urged the public to remain vigilant, especially in parking areas and during nighttime hours. He also encouraged members of the public to report suspicious behavior immediately to prevent similar incidents.
This incident underscores the unpredictable risks faced by the public in everyday spaces and highlights the importance of swift police response. As urban centers grow busier, maintaining public vigilance and strengthening safety measures remain critical for communities in both Malaysia and neighboring Singapore.
