New Malaysia-Indonesia boundary demarcation reshapes sovereignty, tourism, and border security priorities

Once symbolizing cross-border harmony, the iconic “two-nation house” on Sebatik Island has quietly lost its status as a Malaysian landmark, following a newly agreed boundary demarcation between Malaysia and Indonesia.

Tourism Landmark Loses Malaysian Status
The well-known “two-nation house” at Sungai Haji Kuning, Pulau Sebatik, is no longer recognized as a Malaysian tourism attraction. Kalabakan Member of Parliament Datuk Andi Muhammad Suryady Bandy confirmed that under the latest Malaysia-Indonesia boundary demarcation, the site now lies fully within Indonesian territory. The change follows formal bilateral discussions and technical verification agreed upon by both governments.

New Boundary Agreement Explained
According to Andi, Malaysia now retains only jetty and base facilities in the Sungai Haji Kuning area, along with several other locations such as Sungai Melayu and Serudong. The revised border was established through mutual consent, supported by modern technological mapping tools and diplomatic agreements. While some areas were gained by Malaysia, others, including Kampung Sungai Haji Kuning, were ceded to Indonesia.

Citizenship Choices for Border Residents
The demarcation has also raised citizenship concerns for residents living in affected villages. Andi explained that residents were offered a choice: apply for Malaysian citizenship or remain Indonesian citizens. Dual citizenship is not permitted under Malaysian law, meaning residents must commit to one nationality through formal legal procedures.

Development and Security Implications
Clear border demarcation is seen as essential for structured development and improved governance in legally recognized territories. Andi emphasized that the clarity would allow authorities to plan infrastructure and public services more effectively, while reinforcing Malaysia’s sovereignty along its border with Indonesia.

Strengthening Border Control

To address persistent security challenges, including the smuggling of gas and controlled goods, Andi highlighted the importance of implementing three new border control posts announced in this year’s national budget. These measures are particularly urgent as some Malaysian residents on Sebatik Island continue to face shortages of essential supplies such as gas cylinders.

Call for Accurate Information
Andi urged border communities to rely on verified and up-to-date information regarding the new boundary arrangements to prevent misinformation and confusion. He also expressed confidence that the Malaysian government would continue balancing national security priorities with the welfare of communities living along the border.

The reclassification of the two-nation house reflects how evolving geopolitical agreements can reshape daily life, tourism identity, and security planning. For both Indonesia and Malaysia, the new demarcation underscores the importance of diplomacy, technological precision, and people-centered policies in managing shared borders across Southeast Asia.
