Dozens of refugee children gain school access as Batam strengthens cross-sector support systems

As a strategic border city, Batam is balancing humanitarian responsibility with regional stability by ensuring refugee children continue learning and receiving proper care while awaiting resettlement.

Education Access for Refugee Children
The Batam City Government has confirmed that 67 foreign refugee children are currently enrolled in formal education across various school levels in the city. An additional 38 children are participating in school preparation programs to help them transition smoothly into Indonesia’s education system. Education access has been positioned as a top priority to ensure children do not lose critical years of learning while living in temporary shelters.

Support for Special Needs Students
Beyond mainstream schooling, Batam has also facilitated access to education for refugee children with special needs. These students are enrolled at a Special Needs Junior High School, reflecting the city’s inclusive approach to upholding basic rights regardless of nationality or physical condition.

Coordinated Management of Refugees

As of January 2026, Batam is hosting 359 foreign refugees under the supervision of the International Organization for Migration. They are housed at two main locations, Hotel Kolekta in Lubuk Baja and a Non-Detention Accommodation facility in Sekupang. Most refugees originate from Afghanistan, totaling 227 people, followed by Sudan with 84, Somalia with 20, and several other countries.

Strengthening Inter-Agency Coordination
Batam City Secretary Firmansyah emphasized the importance of cross-sector coordination during a regional refugee handling meeting on January 28, 2026. Authorities continue to strengthen cooperation between government agencies to monitor housing conditions, address social issues, and maintain public order and community security in surrounding neighborhoods.

Expanding Healthcare Services
Healthcare remains another critical focus area. The city government works closely with the Health Office, community health centers, hospitals, and partner organizations to provide medical services. These include health education, basic screenings, mental health and psychosocial support, and medical referrals when necessary.

Long-Term Humanitarian Commitment
These efforts are carried out continuously to ensure refugees, especially children, receive adequate protection and essential services while in Batam. The approach reflects Indonesia’s broader commitment to humanitarian principles while managing complex cross-border challenges in a strategic maritime region.

Batam’s coordinated response highlights how local governments can play a crucial role in addressing global displacement issues. By prioritizing education, healthcare, and inter-agency cooperation, the city offers a practical model for managing refugees humanely while safeguarding regional stability, an issue closely watched by both Indonesians and Singaporeans due to Batam’s strategic proximity.
