Authorities intercept hundreds of suspected drug-laced e-cigarettes entering Batam from Malaysia

Batam’s strategic position along international shipping routes continues to make it a prime target for cross-border smuggling, prompting intensified surveillance by law enforcement agencies.

Cross-Border Smuggling Attempt Thwarted
The Riau Islands Police Narcotics Directorate successfully foiled an attempted smuggling of hundreds of illegal electronic cigarettes at Harbour Bay Port, Batu Ampar, Batam. The operation was carried out by Subdirectorate 3 of Ditresnarkoba Polda Kepri after receiving intelligence about illicit goods entering Batam via international sea routes.

Hundreds of Vapes Seized
Authorities secured approximately 230 vape units suspected to have originated from Malaysia. The devices are believed to potentially contain narcotics, raising serious concerns over their intended distribution within Batam. The seizure took place on Tuesday morning, January 27, following coordinated surveillance at the port area.

Three Suspects Detained

Police arrested three individuals in connection with the case. Two suspects were identified as intermediaries responsible for receiving and safeguarding the smuggled goods upon arrival. Further investigations led officers to a third suspect who is believed to be the main financier behind the illegal shipment.

Coordinated Enforcement Effort
The operation was conducted in close coordination with Batam Customs, ensuring that enforcement procedures complied fully with legal and regulatory requirements. This inter-agency collaboration highlights ongoing efforts to tighten border controls and curb the entry of illegal goods through Batam’s busy maritime gateways.

Police Confirm Ongoing Investigation
Kasubdit 3 Ditresnarkoba Polda Kepri, Kompol Felix Mauk, confirmed the arrests and seizure but stated that detailed information regarding the suspects and the full chronology would be disclosed in an official release by the Polda Kepri Public Relations Division. All three suspects are currently undergoing intensive questioning at Polda Kepri headquarters.

Smuggling Routes and Distribution Under Review
Investigators are now focusing on tracing the origin of the vape shipment, identifying the smuggling routes used, and determining the intended distribution network within Batam. Authorities are also examining whether the case is linked to a wider transnational smuggling syndicate operating across regional borders.

This case underscores the persistent challenges faced by Indonesian authorities in safeguarding maritime borders amid rising cross-border crimes in the Riau Islands. Strengthened cooperation between police and customs agencies remains critical, particularly given Batam’s proximity to Singapore and Malaysia, where illicit trade routes frequently overlap and impact regional security.
