Indonesia’s fight against narcotics took a decisive step forward as authorities in the Riau Islands destroyed a significant cache of illegal drugs, highlighting both enforcement successes and emerging threats targeting younger users.
Major Drug Evidence Destroyed in Batam
The Riau Islands Police Narcotics Directorate carried out the destruction of seized narcotics on Thursday, January 15, 2026, following drug busts conducted between November and December 2025. The operation was led by Narcotics Director Senior Commissioner Suyono, accompanied by Police Public Relations Head Senior Commissioner Nona.
Authorities confirmed that all destroyed evidence had received formal seizure approval from the Batam District Prosecutor’s Office, ensuring the process complied fully with legal procedures. A small portion of the evidence was retained for court proceedings and forensic laboratory examinations.
Scale of Seizures Highlights Growing Threat
The destroyed narcotics included 171.52 grams of crystal methamphetamine from a total seizure of 191.76 grams, 2,297 ecstasy pills, 8.49 grams of powdered ecstasy, and 146 liquid vape cartridges containing etomidate. Police estimate the operation prevented drug abuse that could have affected approximately 3,414 people nationwide.

Etomidate Vape Emerges as New Modus
Commissioner Suyono highlighted the growing circulation of vape liquids containing etomidate as a serious concern. The substance is disguised as legal vape products, making detection more difficult and increasing the risk of exposure among young users.
Police warned that this new trafficking method reflects how drug networks continue to adapt, exploiting lifestyle trends to distribute controlled substances with lower visibility.
Key Arrests Across Batam
Several major arrests supported the seizures. In Sagulung, suspect Z.A. was detained roadside at Taman Batu Aji Indah 2 housing area with 2,200 ecstasy pills and 8.49 grams of powdered ecstasy. He faces charges under Articles 114 and 112 of Indonesia’s Narcotics Law No. 35 of 2009.
Another suspect, Z.L., was arrested in Room 209 of Golden Gate Hotel in Lubuk Baja with 98.12 grams of crystal meth. A third suspect, S.K., was detained at Baloi Apartment with 93.64 grams of crystal meth and 108 ecstasy pills, facing additional conspiracy charges under Article 132.
Ongoing Investigation at Tanjung Uma Port
One case involving 148 vape liquid cartridges containing etomidate, seized at Tanjung Uma People’s Port, remains under active investigation. Police believe the case may be linked to broader trafficking networks using maritime routes to move narcotics discreetly.
Authorities continue to trace supply chains and identify additional suspects connected to the shipment.
Public Cooperation Remains Critical
Commissioner Suyono reaffirmed the Riau Islands Police’s commitment to tightening surveillance, anticipating new drug trafficking tactics, and maintaining aggressive enforcement. He also urged residents to actively report suspicious activities, emphasizing that community involvement is essential to curbing narcotics distribution.
