Community-driven career initiative connects East Coast residents to jobs, skills, and employers

Finding the right job can be stressful, even in a resilient labor market. A new community-based initiative in Singapore’s east aims to ease that pressure by bringing real career opportunities closer to where people live.

A Community-Centered Approach to Employment
Launched on Jan 14, East Side Best Careers is a year-long initiative by the East Coast GRC team designed to connect residents directly with employers, career pathways, and skills support. The program targets fresh graduates, mid-career professionals, youth, and parents seeking flexible work options closer to home. According to Minister for Law and Second Minister for Home Affairs Edwin Tong, the initiative responds to growing anxiety among residents navigating an increasingly complex job market.

Real Stories Behind the Job Search
For Gerraine Lin, a 35-year-old former marketing executive and mother of two, the initiative offers renewed hope. After taking two years off work to pursue a full-time sports science degree at Edith Cowan University, she plans to rejoin the workforce after graduating in May. Living in Joo Chiat, Lin hopes to secure a marketing role at the Civil Aviation Authority of Singapore, citing work-life balance and proximity to home as key priorities.

Aviation Sector Takes Center Stage
One of the headline events under the initiative is the East Side OneAviation Careers fair, jointly organized with CAAS and NTUC’s Employment and Employability Institute. Held on Feb 28 and March 1 at Heartbeat@Bedok, the fair will feature roles across the aviation ecosystem. Thirteen companies, including SATS and Scoot, have confirmed participation. CAAS director Angela Ng noted that the aviation sector already employs over 60,000 people and is set to expand further with future developments such as Terminal 5.

Thousands of Jobs and Internships Offered
East Side Best Careers is expected to unlock more than 10,000 job opportunities for East Coast GRC residents. Beyond full-time roles, 17 companies are offering 50 internship placements across industries such as real estate, industrial automation, hospitality, and serviced residences. Employers include ERA Singapore, Azbil Corporation, and The Ascott Limited, providing early exposure for students and first-time job seekers.

Support Beyond Job Listings

The initiative goes beyond career fairs by offering hands-on support through job matching, career coaching, and skills upgrading. NTUC e2i will deploy tools such as the AI Career Coach to help residents with resume writing and interview preparation. Direct hiring channels are also available through The Bosses Network, an advocacy group representing over 3,000 local enterprises, emphasizing nearby workplaces to improve retention and community ties.

Youth and Families in Focus
The program officially begins on Jan 26 with the South East CDC Youth Career Fair, followed by Career Launch @ South East from Jan 26 to 27. These events focus on youth readiness and practical exposure to employers. East Coast resident Hozehfa Mohamed Hussin Topiwala, 53, plans to bring his son, an NTU mechanical engineering undergraduate, to the fairs, stressing the value of face-to-face engagement in an increasingly digital job market.

East Side Best Careers reflects a broader shift toward localized, people-centered employment strategies. By embedding job opportunities within neighborhoods, the initiative strengthens workforce resilience while addressing real-life concerns around accessibility, family time, and career confidence. For Indonesians and Singaporeans observing regional labor trends, it highlights how community-based solutions can play a critical role in future workforce development.
