Driverless shuttles connect homes to key amenities as public rollout nears
Punggol is stepping into the future of transport as autonomous shuttles begin serving residents closer to home, signaling a major milestone in Singapore’s smart mobility journey.
Community Rides Launch in Punggol
Residents in Punggol began experiencing driverless travel on Jan. 12, 2026, with the launch of Community Rides for Autonomous Vehicle Shuttle Route 1. The pilot allows selected residents to try the service and provide feedback before it opens to the public in the coming months, according to the Land Transport Authority (LTA).
Improving East to West Connectivity
Route 1 is designed to enhance east to west connectivity within Punggol. It links residential areas such as Matilda Court and Punggol Clover to key amenities including Oasis Terraces Polyclinic and Punggol Plaza. The route spans about 10 kilometers and takes approximately 40 minutes per loop, helping residents save up to 15 minutes per trip by reducing indirect bus routes and long walks.
Expansion Through Three Autonomous Routes
The deployment is part of a broader plan to roll out three autonomous shuttle routes across Punggol. Route 1 and Route 3 are operated by Grab, while Route 2 is managed by ComfortDelGro and remains in earlier preparation stages. Route 2 will serve north east Punggol, connecting Northshore residents to Oasis Terraces, Punggol Plaza, One Punggol, and Punggol Coast MRT station. All routes will operate on weekdays from 9:30am to 5pm, with shuttles arriving roughly every 15 minutes.
Safety and Operational Readiness
Safety remains central to the program. Each shuttle carries a trained safety operator who can take control if necessary. Before passenger service began, the vehicles underwent extensive closed circuit testing using simulated real world conditions. For Route 1 alone, the shuttles have completed more than 10,000 kilometers of autonomous driving without incident, with vehicle data continuously shared with LTA for monitoring.
Positive Community Reception
Public sentiment toward autonomous vehicles in Punggol has been largely positive. An LTA survey of about 900 residents conducted between September and October 2025 found that three in four respondents were comfortable riding in autonomous vehicles. More than half believed the technology could improve road safety, while four in five felt it would enhance connectivity across Singapore.

Industry and Community Engagement
To familiarize residents with the initiative, Grab and ComfortDelGro conducted 12 Meet and Greet sessions since December 2025, engaging around 200 residents. According to Grab’s Head of Strategic Projects Dennis Wang, the Punggol deployment allows operators to better understand real world operations, passenger interaction, and demand patterns, particularly in underserved transport areas.
The rollout of autonomous shuttles in Punggol marks a significant step toward smarter, safer urban mobility. For Indonesia and Singapore alike, the initiative offers a real world blueprint for how autonomous transport can enhance connectivity, reduce travel time, and build public trust in emerging mobility technologies across dense urban communities.
