Royal directive follows backlash over planned “Glamping with Pride” event in Hulu Langat
A planned lifestyle retreat in Selangor has triggered firm intervention from the state’s highest authority, reinforcing the role of religious values in public life and governance.
Royal Directive Following Viral Event
The Sultan of Selangor, Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah, has expressed firm opposition to festivals, parades, events, or any form of promotion linked to LGBT lifestyles in the state. The stance follows public attention surrounding a planned two-day event titled “Glamping with Pride” in Hulu Langat, scheduled to take place this weekend.
Audience With Religious Authorities
During an audience session held on Wednesday, the Sultan instructed Selangor Islamic Religious Council chairman Salehuddin Saidin and state mufti Anhar Opir to take decisive action against any LGBT-related activities. The directive was issued after the event’s promotional poster circulated widely on social media, drawing criticism from multiple quarters.
Religious Position Emphasized
In a joint statement, Salehuddin and Anhar said the Sultan stressed that LGBT practices are considered sinful under Islamic teachings and could invite divine punishment upon the state. The Sultan also made clear that he does not permit the formation of any associations, clubs, organizations, or NGOs connected to LGBT activities in Selangor.
Call to Enforce Existing Laws
In line with the royal decree, the religious leaders urged the Selangor Islamic Department, police, and local councils to deny permits for the glamping event and to closely monitor any attempts to organize similar activities. They emphasized the importance of preserving social harmony and ensuring practices remain aligned with Islamic principles.
Event Details and Opposition
The “Glamping with Pride” event drew criticism after details emerged online, including planned activities such as campfire storytelling, themed games, a runway show, and a skit competition, with participation limited through QR code registration. Selangor PAS Youth publicly opposed the event, citing conflicts with religious values and cultural norms, although the organizer, Jejaka, initially stated the retreat would proceed.
Police Reports and Investigations
Authorities have since received five police reports related to the event. Investigations are ongoing under Section 504 of the Penal Code, which addresses intentional insult with intent to provoke a breach of the peace, and Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act, which concerns improper use of network facilities or services.
The incident highlights the continued influence of religious authority in shaping public policy and social boundaries in Malaysia. It also underscores the delicate balance between cultural norms, legal frameworks, and evolving social discourse, a dynamic closely watched by both Indonesians and Singaporeans due to shared regional sensitivities and values.
