Police Act Swiftly After Family Report Leads to Arrest of 65-Year-Old Suspect

A quiet neighborhood in Batam was shaken after authorities uncovered an alleged sexual crime involving a minor, prompting swift police action and renewed calls for community vigilance.

Incident Uncovered Through Family Report
The Sekupang Police in Batam successfully uncovered an alleged sexual abuse case involving a minor after the victim’s family filed a report on Friday, January 9, 2026. The victim, a young girl identified as Bunga, a pseudonym used to protect her identity, was reportedly assaulted a day earlier on January 8 in Kampung Bukit, Tanjung Riau, Sekupang, Riau Islands.

Alleged Abuse at Local Snack Stall
According to police findings, the incident occurred when the child visited a snack stall owned by the suspect, a 65-year-old man identified by the initials MR. After purchasing snacks, the suspect allegedly lured the victim into his house and committed an indecent act. The child reportedly screamed and cried in fear before being released.

Victim Alerted Family Immediately
After escaping the situation, the victim returned home and informed her mother about the incident. The family then promptly reported the case to the Sekupang Police, enabling authorities to take immediate action. Police confirmed that a medical examination was conducted on the victim as part of the investigation.

Swift Police Response Prevented Vigilante Action
Sekupang Police Chief Kompol Hippal Tua Sirait said officers received information later that night that residents had secured the suspect and that he risked becoming a target of mob justice. To prevent unlawful action, the Criminal Investigation Unit led by Ipda Riyanto arrived at the scene around 10:00 p.m. local time and safely transported the suspect to the police station.

Suspect Formally Charged and Detained

Following witness examinations, medical reports, and a case review, police officially named MR as a suspect and placed him under detention. He has been charged under Article 415(b) of the Indonesian Criminal Code concerning indecent acts against minors, which carries a maximum sentence of nine years in prison.

Police Urge Greater Community Awareness
Kompol Hippal emphasized the importance of public vigilance, urging parents and residents to closely supervise children and report any suspected criminal activity immediately. He stressed that community cooperation plays a crucial role in preventing crimes against minors and ensuring swift law enforcement action.

The case highlights ongoing concerns over child safety in densely populated communities across Batam and the wider Riau Islands. It also underscores the importance of prompt reporting, responsible community action, and decisive law enforcement in protecting vulnerable individuals, a shared concern for both Indonesians and Singaporeans living and working across the region.
