Routine fumigation and strict warehouse monitoring ensure rice stocks remain pest-free
Food security remains a critical concern in island regions, and stock quality is just as important as quantity. In the Riau Islands, authorities are stepping up preventive measures to ensure staple supplies remain safe, clean, and ready for public distribution.
Strict Daily Maintenance and Fumigation
Perum Bulog Batam Branch Office in the Riau Islands has confirmed that its rice stock, totaling around 4,000 tons, is secure and free from pests. The assurance was delivered by Bulog Batam Branch Head Guido XL Pereira, who emphasized that daily warehouse maintenance and routine fumigation remain the backbone of stock protection efforts.
Rice stocks are stored at two main locations, Gudang Batu Merah in Batam City and Gudang Sungai Raya in Tanjung Balai Karimun. According to Guido, both facilities undergo daily inspections to ensure cleanliness, ventilation, and storage conditions meet food safety standards.
Preventing and Handling Pest Risks
Fumigation is conducted every two to three months, depending on environmental conditions and warehouse assessments. The process targets common rice pests such as Sitophilus oryzae, commonly known as rice weevils, which can compromise grain quality if left untreated.
If any rice grains show early signs of infestation, Bulog immediately applies a sealed plastic fumigation method lasting up to 11 days using specialized fumigation agents. After treatment, warehouses are resprayed and reinspected to prevent the spread of pests to other stock.
Verified Stock Levels Across Warehouses
Based on the latest data, Bulog Batam currently stores 4,273.4 tons of Public Service Obligation or medium-grade rice. Of this amount, 3,659.9 tons are located in Batam, while 513.5 tons are stored in Karimun. These reserves are prepared to be distributed swiftly whenever public demand arises.
In addition to medium-grade rice, Bulog Batam also maintains 13.76 tons of premium rice. Other essential commodities stored include 288 cartons of Sanford bottled water and 9,622 liters of Minyakita cooking oil, supporting broader food supply needs in the region.
Temporary Sugar Stock Gap
Bulog Batam also acknowledged that packaged sugar stocks are currently unavailable. The shortage is due to pending raw material arrivals required for the packaging process. Officials stated that procurement is ongoing and updates will be provided once supplies are restored.
Readiness for Public Distribution
With continuous supervision, structured fumigation schedules, and rapid response protocols, Bulog Batam remains confident that rice quality is fully maintained. The agency reaffirmed its readiness to distribute rice stocks at any time to support community needs across the Riau Islands.
Bulog Batam’s proactive stock management highlights the importance of prevention and preparedness in safeguarding food security. For Indonesia and nearby Singapore, where supply chain stability is increasingly interconnected, consistent quality control strengthens public confidence and regional resilience.
