Pirate Queen: Zheng Yi Sao marks a global milestone in AI-driven filmmaking
Malaysia is stepping into cinematic history with the theatrical debut of its first fully AI-generated feature film, signaling a bold leap in both creative storytelling and technological ambition.
A First-of-Its-Kind Theatrical Release
Local audiences will be able to watch Pirate Queen: Zheng Yi Sao in cinemas nationwide starting January 1. The 76-minute historical epic is produced by Future Studio in collaboration with Singapore-based FizzDragon and is set to screen at major cinema chains including TGV and GSC. The film is also positioning itself as the world’s first AI-generated movie to receive a full theatrical release.
Reframing a Historical Figure
According to Future Studio president and executive producer Professor Yoki Chin, the film aims to challenge long-standing portrayals of Zheng Yi Sao. Often depicted negatively in Western pop culture, the pirate queen is reimagined as a powerful symbol of women empowerment. Chin highlighted her journey from a poor fishing village to becoming the wife of pirate king Zheng Yi, later uniting pirate fleets and resisting British forces during the Opium Wars.
AI Technology and Cost Efficiency
The film is created entirely using artificial intelligence-generated content, allowing production costs to be significantly lower than traditional filmmaking. Large-scale naval battles and crowd scenes were produced without physical sets, extras, or expensive props. Chin noted that such scenes would have been financially prohibitive using conventional methods.
Why the Release Was Delayed
Although the film was completed in April, its release was postponed to January 1 to allow further refinements and to undergo clearance with the local censorship board. The production incorporates multiple AI core technologies, including machine learning, computer vision, and natural language processing, reflecting rapid advancements in creative software over the past year.
Racing Ahead in the Global AI Film Industry
Chin said waiting for AI software to reach perfection would have delayed the project indefinitely. Instead, the team prioritized completing the film to establish a global precedent. He emphasized the importance of setting an early benchmark and positioning Malaysia ahead of the United States and China in the race for AI-generated creative content.
Building Talent and Industry Readiness
Despite its reliance on AI, Chin stressed that human creative direction remains essential to achieving a cohesive final product. Future Studio has been appointed by the Malaysia Digital Economy Corporation to train more than 100 businesses in animation, film, and game development on AI creative tools. The studio is also working with the National Film Development Corporation Malaysia to train students in AI-based filmmaking, marketing, and short-form drama production.
The release of Pirate Queen: Zheng Yi Sao reflects Malaysia’s growing ambition to lead in creative artificial intelligence while reshaping historical narratives through new technology. With strong government backing, including RM5.9 billion allocated for national AI training, the project highlights how Southeast Asia is emerging as a serious contender in the future of digital cinema, offering new opportunities for collaboration and innovation across the region.
