Former security guard arrested after machete attack sparked by workplace reprimands
A routine workplace warning escalated into a near-fatal act of violence in Batam, exposing how unresolved tensions and poor conflict management can quickly turn deadly in essential public service environments.
Attack at MBG Kitchen Shocks Batam
A violent assault occurred at the Dapur Makan Bergizi Gratis (MBG) kitchen in Sagulung, Batam, on Sunday night, December 21, 2025, at around 11:30 p.m. The victim, Supriadi, 29, was attacked from behind while at work by PA, 29, a former security guard at the same facility. The MBG kitchen operates under Indonesia’s Free Nutritious Meal Program, a government-backed initiative aimed at improving community nutrition.
Victim Suffers Serious Injuries
According to Barelang Police Criminal Investigation Chief Kompol Debby Tri Andrestian, the suspect used a machete measuring approximately 50 centimeters to strike the victim twice. Supriadi sustained deep slash wounds to the left side of his neck and his right hand. He was rushed to RSUD Embung Fatimah for emergency medical treatment and was later confirmed to be in stable condition.

Motive Linked to Workplace Reprimands
Investigators revealed that the attack was triggered by resentment rather than financial disputes. Sagulung Police Criminal Unit Chief Iptu Anwar Aris stated that PA felt offended after being repeatedly reprimanded by Supriadi, who was his superior. The warnings were reportedly related to procedural violations, including the suspect bringing unauthorized individuals into the workplace. Police emphasized that the incident had no connection to salary or employment benefits, dismissing circulating rumors.
Arrest After Week-Long Search
After a week-long manhunt, police arrested PA on Saturday night, December 27, 2025, at around 9:00 p.m. in the Tembesi area of Sagulung. The arrest followed a coordinated investigation ordered by Barelang Police Chief Kombes Pol Anggoro Wicaksono. Officers also seized evidence including clothing worn during the attack and a motorcycle believed to have been used by the suspect.
Serious Charges Filed
PA has been charged with premeditated assault under Indonesia’s criminal law. Authorities stated that the offense carries a minimum prison sentence of seven years and a maximum of fifteen years. The suspect and evidence were transferred to Sagulung Police Station for further questioning and case processing, according to Polresta Barelang officials.
Police Warn Against Escalating Workplace Conflict
Police officials urged employers and workers to address workplace disputes early and responsibly. Kompol Debby reaffirmed the Batam Police’s commitment to taking firm action against violent crime to maintain public order and protect workers, particularly in public service facilities such as MBG kitchens that serve vulnerable communities.
The Batam MBG kitchen assault underscores the real dangers of unmanaged workplace conflict and the importance of enforcing professional boundaries. As Batam continues to grow as a cross-border economic hub closely linked to Singapore, maintaining safe and disciplined work environments remains essential to public trust, worker safety, and regional stability.
