National nutrition program ensures uninterrupted food support for students and vulnerable groups
Batam’s commitment to public nutrition remains firm as a national feeding program continues operating despite the school holiday period.
Program Continuity During School Breaks
The Free Nutritious Meal Program, known locally as Program Makan Bergizi Gratis or MBG, continues to operate across Batam during the school holidays. The National Nutrition Agency, or Badan Gizi Nasional (BGN), has issued special technical guidelines and an official circular to ensure beneficiaries continue receiving nutritional support.
Special Guidelines for Student Beneficiaries
According to the Batam Regional Coordinator of the Nutrition Fulfillment Service Unit, or SPPG, the policy safeguards students’ rights as beneficiaries of the national program even when classes are not in session. The guidance outlines clear mechanisms to maintain food distribution throughout the holiday period.
Bundled Distribution System Explained
Under the special guidelines, MBG meals for students are distributed using a bundling system. Dry food packages covering multiple days are provided at once, provided the SPPG unit and schools agree to collect the packages. This approach reflects reduced school activity during holidays while maintaining nutritional standards.
Ensuring Nutritional Standards Are Met
For example, meal packages intended for Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday are distributed together on Monday. The food consists of nutritionally balanced dry items designed to meet government dietary standards. This system also simplifies field supervision and distribution logistics.
Services for Vulnerable Groups Remain Unchanged
Meanwhile, MBG services for non student beneficiaries continue as usual. Pregnant women, breastfeeding mothers, and toddlers receive meals through the standard daily distribution mechanism, except on national public holidays and official joint leave days.
Coordination and Oversight Emphasized
SPPG Batam emphasized the importance of coordination between schools and service units to ensure smooth and targeted distribution. The agency aims to ensure all beneficiaries receive support without disruption, despite operational adjustments during the school break.
The continuation of the MBG program during school holidays reflects Indonesia’s broader commitment to improving public nutrition and reducing stunting rates. For communities in Batam and across the region, the policy reinforces long term human capital development, aligning public health priorities with social stability that also resonates with neighboring Singapore’s focus on regional welfare and workforce quality.
