Middle-aged patron alleges coercive sales tactics led to over S$12,000 spent overnight
A night meant for emotional relief turned into a costly lesson, raising fresh concerns over transparency and consumer protection in Singapore’s nightlife scene.
A Night Out That Escalated Quickly
A woman in her 50s reported spending more than S$12,000 in a single night at a male host club in Singapore, claiming she was pressured into excessive spending while under the influence of alcohol. The incident occurred on Nov. 18 and was first reported by Shin Min Daily News.
Seeking Comfort Amid Personal Struggles
According to the woman, she was dealing with unresolved issues at both work and home and decided to visit a nightclub after a friend suggested it as a way to unwind. Hoping for conversation rather than extravagance, she visited Club M, also known as Long Gong or Dragon’s Den, located along Coleman Street.
Host Interaction and Garland Spending
She was introduced to a male host known as Sky, a Chinese national, who assisted in booking a private room. During the session, she was encouraged to drink, play games, and present garlands to multiple male hosts. Each garland reportedly cost S$200, with presentation sessions occurring every two hours.
Alcohol, Confusion, and Lack of Transparency
Despite usually having a high alcohol tolerance, the woman said she became unexpectedly tipsy and disoriented. She claimed the club did not issue receipts and prohibited photography, limiting her ability to track spending in real time. She later discovered that S$11,000 of her total bill was spent solely on garlands.
Aftermath and Legal Action
Feeling taken advantage of, the woman cut ties with both the host and the friend who introduced her. She filed a police report and is seeking legal avenues to recover the money. Police reportedly advised her to approach the Consumer Association of Singapore, where her complaint is still under review.
Club Responds to Allegations
Club M denied any wrongdoing, stating it operates legally within Singapore’s regulatory framework. A club spokesperson told Shin Min that surveillance footage has been handed over to legal counsel and that the club intends to pursue legal action against the woman for allegedly damaging its reputation.
A Cautionary Tale for Patrons
The case has sparked renewed debate over consumer awareness, emotional vulnerability, and sales practices within nightlife establishments. It highlights the importance of clear pricing, informed consent, and personal caution, especially when alcohol and emotional stress are involved.
This incident underscores broader concerns about consumer protection and transparency in entertainment venues, particularly those catering to emotionally vulnerable patrons. As legal proceedings unfold, the case serves as a reminder for both Indonesians and Singaporeans to remain vigilant, informed, and cautious when navigating nightlife experiences that blend emotional engagement with high-cost spending.
