Medical Assessments and Hospital Transfers
At least ten people were assessed for smoke inhalation. Two individuals required hospital treatment, with one taken to Singapore General Hospital and another to KK Women’s and Children’s Hospital. Thick smoke filled the block, and residents described choking conditions as they made their escape.

Terrifying Moments for Neighbours
Several residents recounted the tense evacuation. Andy Ng, 27, said he heard shouting before seeing the smoke from his window. He rushed to evacuate with his grandmother, while other family members stayed behind due to mobility challenges. Another resident, Ms. C.N., 30, said visibility dropped to zero as she fled her unit with her two cats, wearing double masks to cope with the suffocating air.

Video Footage Shows Intense Flames
A widely shared Facebook video captured the coffee shop engulfed in flames around 11.30am. Thick plumes of smoke could be seen rising high above the block as firefighters worked to bring the situation under control. The blaze was extinguished by about 12.30pm, although many residents remained outdoors waiting for clearance to return home.

Community Support and MP’s Response
Tanjong Pagar GRC MP Rachel Ong thanked SCDF and community members for their swift assistance. By 1.45pm, most residents were able to return home, while those living directly above the coffee shop received lunch and temporary support. Rising Fire Trend in Singapore
The incident contributes to a broader upward trend in fire cases. SCDF’s annual statistics released on February 13 reported 1,990 fire incidents in 2024, up from 1,954 in 2023. The spike was attributed to more fires at commercial, social, and communal premises. Fire-related deaths also rose from three in 2023 to five in 2024, underscoring the importance of fire preparedness and prevention.

Cause Still Under Investigation

Authorities are continuing to investigate the cause of the Telok Blangah blaze. The incident has renewed conversations about safety in dense residential environments and the need for vigilance in shared commercial spaces within housing estates.

The Telok Blangah blaze not only displaced dozens of residents but also echoed a troubling rise in fire incidents across Singapore. As authorities work to support affected families and uncover the cause, the event serves as a timely reminder for communities in both Indonesia and Singapore to stay alert to safety risks in busy residential and commercial spaces.
