Israeli airstrike in Beirut kills Hezbollah’s acting chief of staff, triggering fears of renewed escalation.

A rare Israeli airstrike on Beirut’s southern suburbs has killed Hezbollah’s top military commander, threatening to unravel a fragile ceasefire and raising regional alarm.

A Targeted Strike in Lebanon’s Capital

Israel confirmed it killed Haytham Ali Tabatabai—also known as Ali Tabtabai—Hezbollah’s acting chief of staff, in an airstrike on Beirut’s Haret Hreik district on Sunday, 23 November. The attack, the first on the Lebanese capital in months, hit a multi-storey apartment building, killing at least five people and wounding 28, according to Lebanon’s Ministry of Public Health.

Hezbollah Mourns Its Senior Commander

Hezbollah acknowledged Tabatabai’s death, describing him as “the great commander” who had spent decades confronting Israel. Born in 1968, he joined Hezbollah at age 12 and rose to command most of the group’s military units. Previously sanctioned by the US in 2016, he carried a reward of up to US$5 million for information on his activities.

A Ceasefire Under Strain

The strike comes despite a US-brokered ceasefire in November 2024 meant to halt more than a year of fighting. While Hezbollah has largely refrained from firing on Israel since the agreement, Israel has continued almost daily attacks on southern Lebanon, claiming the group is rebuilding its arsenal and defensive positions.

Warnings of Escalation From Lebanese Officials

Senior Hezbollah official Mahmoud Qmati said Israel had crossed a “red line,” noting the group’s leadership is assessing its response. Lebanese President Joseph Aoun urged the international community to intervene urgently, warning that intensified strikes risk destabilizing the entire region ahead of Pope Leo XIV’s visit next week.

Israel Pressures Lebanon on Disarmament

Israel maintains that Hezbollah continues to regroup in the south, despite Lebanon’s September 2025 government-approved plan to disarm the militia nationwide by year-end. Hezbollah refuses to comply, arguing Israel’s ongoing bombardment and occupation of southern posts violate the ceasefire terms.

A Precarious Moment for Regional Security

Analysts say Hezbollah now faces a dilemma: retaliate and risk a broader war that could damage its political base, or remain restrained and invite further Israeli operations. With Israel already having killed much of Hezbollah’s leadership—including former chief Hassan Nasrallah—concerns are growing that a single misstep could trigger another full-scale conflict.

The death of Haytham Ali Tabatabai marks a dangerous escalation in Israel–Hezbollah tensions, placing Lebanon at a crossroads as political, religious, and regional factors collide. For Indonesians and Singaporeans watching closely, this development underscores how swiftly Middle Eastern instability can ripple into global markets, diplomacy, and security dynamics.
