Indonesia and the United Kingdom have forged a groundbreaking partnership to combat environmental crime and strengthen biodiversity conservation. The agreement, sealed through a Letter of Intent (LoI) between Indonesia’s Ministry of Environment and The Royal Foundation of The Prince and Princess of Wales, signals a united front for global environmental protection.

Strengthening Global Environmental Action

The collaboration was formalized in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, on November 4, 2025, during a high-level environmental summit. Indonesian Environment Minister Hanif Faisol Nurofiq and Amanda Berry CBE, Chief Executive Officer of The Royal Foundation, signed the LoI, marking a milestone in joint international conservation efforts.

The agreement underscores shared goals in safeguarding biodiversity, promoting sustainable development, and tackling transnational environmental crimes such as illegal logging, wildlife trafficking, and pollution.

Prior to the signing, Minister Hanif and Hashim S. Djojohadikusumo, representing President Prabowo Subianto, met with His Royal Highness Prince William. They conveyed President Prabowo’s appreciation for the British monarchy’s longstanding commitment to environmental and humanitarian causes.

“We deeply value Prince William’s vision and dedication. Together, we aspire to build a safer, fairer, and more sustainable world for both humanity and nature,” Minister Hanif remarked.

The partnership coincided with the adoption of the Rio Declaration 2025, reaffirming international resolve to combat environmental crimes. Participating nations pledged to address illegal logging, mining, wildlife trade, and financial crimes linked to ecological damage. As Minister Hanif noted, “Environmental protection is not merely a national issue, but a collective global responsibility.”
