“I Lite U” project aims to transform KL’s shopping district into a nightlife hub ahead of Visit Malaysia 2026.

Malaysia is investing over S$1.2 million to elevate Kuala Lumpur’s Bukit Bintang into a world-class shopping and nightlife destination, with ambitions to rival Singapore’s Orchard Road and Tokyo’s Ginza by 2026.

Ambitious Makeover for Malaysia’s Retail Heart

Housing and Local Government Minister Nga Kor Ming unveiled the bold vision on October 29 at the soft launch of the “I Lite U” project, a collaborative initiative between his ministry and Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL). The project is a centerpiece of the government’s broader campaign to attract 45 million tourists in 2026.

“My mission is to make Kuala Lumpur’s golden triangle off Bukit Bintang no less than Ginza or Orchard Road,” Nga declared during the launch at Pavilion KL.

A Glow-Up Worth RM4 Million

The RM4 million (S$1.24 million) allocation will focus on revitalizing the area’s urban lighting, with RM2 million directed toward sustainability features. Malaysian cultural motifs will inspire new street lighting designs, creating a more vibrant and immersive nighttime environment.

The plan also includes the unveiling of a Visit Malaysia 2026 sculpture, further branding the area as a tourism icon.

Launch Parade “As Good As Disneyland’s”

Nga also teased a grand parade to mark the project’s official launch on January 3, 2026. “We will ask the police to close Bukit Bintang Road because we will be having a parade, one as good as Disneyland’s,” he said, urging residents and tourists to use public transport on the day.

The event is expected to draw significant attention and kick off the Visit Malaysia 2026 tourism campaign with flair.

More Than Just Lights: Economic Revival

The initiative goes beyond aesthetics. Kuala Lumpur Mayor Maimunah Sharif emphasized that the project is designed to boost tourist safety and stimulate a night-time economy modeled after global cities like Tokyo and Dubai.

“Tourists will enjoy a more lively and safe atmosphere, entrepreneurs will benefit from a planned night-time economy, and residents will witness the beauty of a city that reflects the dignity and identity of Malaysia,” she said.

Positioning KL as a Nightlife Destination

The “I Lite U” project aligns with Malaysia’s strategic vision to diversify its tourism offerings. By enhancing Bukit Bintang’s appeal after dark, Malaysia is betting on extended tourist stays and increased local business activity in a post-pandemic recovery era.

Tourism Malaysia is targeting 45 million arrivals during the Visit Malaysia 2026 campaign, and Bukit Bintang’s transformation is seen as key to achieving that goal.

Kuala Lumpur’s Bukit Bintang is set to become a beacon of Malaysian urban vibrancy. With its mix of cultural lighting, sustainable design, and a Disneyland-style parade, the “I Lite U” project signals Malaysia’s intent to compete with the world’s top city destinations. For tourists, residents, and business owners alike, this initiative promises a brighter, safer, and more exciting KL nightscape, just in time for Visit Malaysia 2026.
