The Republic of Singapore Navy unveils its largest warship yet — a modular, drone-enabled vessel built for evolving maritime challenges.
Singapore has taken a major step into the future of naval warfare with the launch of its first Multi-Role Combat Vessel (MRCV), RSS Victory, at ST Engineering’s Benoi Shipyard. Designed as a “mothership” for unmanned aerial, surface, and underwater systems, the 8,000-tonne warship represents a bold transformation in the Republic of Singapore Navy’s (RSN) fleet modernisation programme.
A New Era for Singapore’s Navy
The launch of RSS Victory on October 21, 2025, marks the beginning of a new generation of naval capabilities for Singapore. As the first of six MRCVs, the vessel will progressively replace the Victory-class missile corvettes that have served since 1989. Defence Minister Chan Chun Sing, who officiated the launch ceremony, described the MRCV as a “game-changing design” for modern warfare.

Built entirely in Singapore, the ship is 150 metres long with an operational range exceeding 7,000 nautical miles and an endurance of over 21 days. Its modular design allows for rapid upgrades to adapt to evolving threats — a crucial feature in an age of rapidly advancing defence technology.
Designed for Unmanned Warfare
The MRCV is built as a true drone mothership, capable of deploying unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), unmanned surface vessels (USVs), and autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs). This integration enables one vessel to perform missions that would typically require several manned ships.
Equipped with a flight deck that can accommodate both drones and medium-lift helicopters, and a stern ramp for launching robotic surface and underwater systems, the MRCV extends Singapore’s surveillance and strike reach across the South China Sea and Strait of Malacca — key sea lines of communication for global trade.
Digital Design and Green Efficiency
Developed in collaboration with the Defence Science and Technology Agency (DSTA) and international partners from Denmark and Sweden, the ship was designed using 3D modelling and digital twinning — a virtual testing process that cut costs, material waste, and construction time. Remarkably, just 12 months elapsed between keel-laying and launch.

The Victory also boasts integrated full electric propulsion (IFEP) — a first for the RSN — producing 30MW of power, enough to supply more than 50,000 HDB flats. This energy can be diverted to its advanced combat systems, ensuring efficiency and flexibility in both peace and wartime operations.
Automation and Smart Operations
Despite its massive scale, the MRCV operates with a crew of fewer than 100 — a feat made possible by advanced automation. Its bridge can be manned by just two operators, while the engineering control centre requires only one. The ship’s mission bay can house eight modular containers, configurable for various operations such as humanitarian assistance or high-intensity combat missions.
This adaptability makes the MRCV both cost-effective and sustainable, aligning with Singapore’s broader goals of technological efficiency and fiscal prudence in defence spending.

Advanced Weapons and Sensors
The Victory is armed with cutting-edge weaponry, including the Strales 76mm guided gun, ASTER B1 NT long-range missiles, and Blue Spear anti-ship missiles. Its radar and electronic systems — such as the Thales SeaFire AESA radar and Safran PASEO XLR sensors — provide superior situational awareness, while a carbon-fibre composite mast will house its multi-sensor arrays.
These systems enable the vessel to serve as both a frontline warship and a command hub within Singapore’s integrated defence network.
Securing the Region’s Sea Lanes
Minister Chan stressed that Singapore’s naval priorities now extend far beyond coastal defence. With growing geopolitical tensions in the South China Sea, maintaining secure sea lines of communication (SLOCs) has become vital. “Singapore’s strategic lines of communication extend much further today,” he said, emphasizing that the MRCV’s modularity ensures it can evolve with emerging threats.
By enabling sustained, unmanned, and long-range operations, the MRCV ensures Singapore’s continued ability to safeguard vital maritime routes — a crucial factor for a trade-dependent island nation at the crossroads of global commerce.
The launch of the RSS Victory positions Singapore as a technological leader in naval innovation within Southeast Asia. As regional waters grow increasingly contested, the MRCV represents not just a strategic asset, but a statement of intent — that the city-state is prepared to navigate an uncertain maritime future with precision, automation, and adaptability. For neighbouring nations like Indonesia and Malaysia, it signals the rise of a smarter, drone-driven maritime era in ASEAN’s security landscape.
