Police investigating fatal incident as witnesses report sudden fall and emergency response at mall’s Level 1

A 56-year-old woman died on Wednesday afternoon after reportedly falling from a height inside Jewel Changi Airport. Authorities confirmed that she was taken unconscious to Changi General Hospital, where she was later pronounced dead.

Emergency Response at Jewel

The Singapore Police Force (SPF) and Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) received a call for assistance at 78 Airport Boulevard — Jewel Changi Airport’s address — around 1.55pm on Oct 16. Emergency responders arrived shortly after and conveyed the woman to Changi General Hospital, where she succumbed to her injuries.

Police confirmed that investigations are ongoing to determine the circumstances surrounding the incident.

Eyewitnesses Describe the Scene

Footage circulated briefly on social media before being taken down showed a woman performing cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) on the victim as mall staff set up barricades. The fall reportedly occurred near Lobby F, outside the Bimba Y Lola outlet on Level 1.

An eyewitness working on Level 2 told Channel NewsAsia she heard a loud “thud” before realizing someone had fallen. Her colleague reportedly saw the woman lying motionless near the seating area.

Jewel’s Management Responds

In a statement to The Straits Times, Lee Ching Wern, Chief Executive of Jewel Changi Airport Development, said:

“We are deeply saddened by the incident that occurred and extend our condolences to the family and loved ones of the deceased. We are working closely with the authorities to provide our full support in their investigations.”

By 6pm, the affected area had been cleared, though several retail staff confirmed they had witnessed the aftermath but were instructed not to discuss details publicly.

Safety Concerns and Previous Incidents

This is not the first time a fall has been reported at Changi Airport. In March 2024, a 20-year-old man was found injured near Terminal 1’s taxi stand after falling from a height. Unlike the recent case, he was taken to hospital conscious and later recovered.

The repeated nature of such incidents raises questions about public safety and mental health awareness in large public spaces.

Ongoing Investigation

Authorities have not confirmed whether foul play is suspected, emphasizing that investigations are still underway. The incident adds to growing discussions about safety protocols in public attractions and transit hubs — especially those with multi-level architecture like Jewel.

The tragic fall at Jewel Changi Airport has left many shocked and grieving, serving as a stark reminder of the need for vigilance in public spaces. As investigations continue, Singaporeans hope for clarity — and for measures that ensure such tragedies are prevented in the future.
