Johor Health Department reports rising mental health concerns, with family issues, bullying, and economic pressures driving demand for treatment and support services.

Johor’s government clinics recorded 2,777 mental health cases between January and August this year, with bullying, family conflicts, and financial stress identified as the main causes. Health officials say the growing number reflects both an increase in mental health awareness and the urgent need to strengthen support services across the state.

Rising Number of Reported Cases

According to Johor Health Department director Dr Mohtar Pungut@Ahmad, the Johor Bahru district recorded the highest number of patients, with 641 individuals seeking treatment during the first eight months of 2025. Of the total, 1,140 people were referred for further mental health assessment, while 118 cases required hospital-level evaluation and treatment.

Root Causes: From Home to Society

Dr Mohtar highlighted that the surge in cases stems from a combination of bullying, family disputes, economic pressure, trauma, and genetic predisposition. He stressed that unresolved domestic or social issues can escalate into more serious mental health conditions, particularly among youths and working adults facing economic strain.

Mentari Centres Bridge the Gap

Speaking during the Mentari Johor Bahru launch and 2025 World Mental Health Day event, Dr Mohtar said facilities like Mentari — established under the Ministry of Health (MOH) — play an essential role in ensuring community-level access to care.

“Mentari provides a community-friendly space for treatment, recovery, and psychosocial interventions. It helps ensure that mental health services remain accessible, even during times of crisis,” he explained.

Support and Accessibility

Dr Marina Abd Rahman Sabri, head of Psychiatry and Mental Health at Sultanah Aminah Hospital, also attended the event, emphasizing collaboration between hospitals and community centres to provide comprehensive care. The Mentari initiative supports early intervention, helping patients manage symptoms before conditions worsen.

Expanding Mental Health Awareness

Dr Mohtar noted that the rising figures may also indicate increased awareness and reduced stigma around seeking help. “While the numbers are worrying, they show that more people are stepping forward to seek treatment instead of suffering in silence,” he said.

Helplines and Public Outreach

The Johor Health Department continues to encourage residents in emotional distress to reach out for professional help. Malaysians can contact:

  • HEAL Line 15555
  • KASIH Line 15999
  • Befrienders for confidential emotional support.

These services are available nationwide to provide counseling, crisis assistance, and referrals to professional care when needed.

The rising number of mental health cases in Johor underscores Malaysia’s growing mental wellness challenge. As social and economic pressures intensify, strengthening access to early intervention and community-based care will be crucial in supporting individuals before their struggles escalate into crises.
