New Barelang Bridge motif unveiled as Batam strengthens batik culture and global market reach
Batam City officially launched the Batik Jembatan Barelang motif during Batam Batik Fashion Week (BBFW) 2025 at Dataran Engku Putri on October 2. The event highlighted Batam’s growing batik identity while offering local artisans and small industries a global stage.
Batik Identity Strengthened
Batam Mayor Amsakar Achmad announced the launch of the Batik Jembatan Barelang motif as a new addition to the city’s cultural identity. The design joins earlier motifs such as Batik Gonggong and Batik Marlin, making up nearly 20 distinct Batam patterns created so far. He stressed that each motif requires legal recognition before official adoption, which makes the BBFW 2025 launch a significant milestone.
Legal Protection for Artisans
Amsakar highlighted that several Batam motifs, including Batik Marlin, have already received intellectual property rights (HAKI). This protection ensures artisans gain economic value from their creations. He added that the city government is committed to supporting artisans in processing HAKI, allowing them to monetize their designs securely.

Economic Value of Batik Barelang
Deputy Mayor and Deputy Head of BP Batam, Li Claudia Chandra, noted that Batik Jembatan Barelang has already achieved sales of IDR 1.5 billion (approx. SGD 120,000). This figure underscores the commercial potential of Batam’s batik industry, which she believes can penetrate national and international markets.

Expo and Market Opportunities
The BBFW 2025 event, running until October 4, not only showcased fashion shows but also provided space for small and medium industries (IKM) to display and sell their products. Visitors could purchase batik directly, turning the event into both a cultural and economic marketplace.
Cultural and National Significance
Coinciding with Indonesia’s National Batik Day, BBFW 2025 emphasized batik as a cultural symbol beyond textiles. “Batik is not just fabric but identity,” said Li Claudia. She invited companies, civil servants, and the wider community to wear Batik Barelang, embedding it in daily life.
Modern Appeal for Younger Generations
Organizers also positioned batik as a fashion statement for younger audiences. By aligning traditional motifs with modern design, BBFW 2025 aims to cultivate pride among Batam’s youth, ensuring that batik remains relevant in a modern, industrial city with global ambitions.
The launch of Batik Jembatan Barelang at BBFW 2025 reflects Batam’s drive to balance cultural heritage with economic growth. With strong government support, rising sales, and recognition on National Batik Day, Batam is turning local creativity into regional pride. This initiative highlights how cities in Indonesia—and across the Singapore-Johor-Riau corridor—can leverage cultural identity to strengthen both community bonds and global economic opportunities.
