Hundreds of iPhones were intercepted in Batam before reaching Kalimantan Barat, saving Rp1 billion in state losses.
Batam Customs successfully thwarted an attempted smuggling of 797 iPhones valued at Rp3.2 billion, preventing significant state revenue loss. The case highlights the persistent challenge of illegal electronics trade in Indonesia.
Smuggling Attempt Stopped in Batam
On Saturday, September 27, 2025, officers from the Batam Customs Office intercepted a suspicious private vehicle at Pelabuhan Roro Telaga Punggur. The car, driven by a man identified as RS, was attempting to board the ferry KMP Barau bound for Tanjung Uban. Upon inspection, officers discovered two suitcases and four bags filled with iPhones.
797 iPhones Seized
The search uncovered a total of 797 Apple iPhones consisting of series 11, 12, and 13, all in used condition. The estimated market value of the confiscated devices is Rp3.2 billion (approx. SGD 256,000), with potential state losses of around Rp1 billion (approx. SGD 80,000) from unpaid import duties and taxes.
Smuggler’s Testimony and Motive
During interrogation, RS, a 36-year-old from Tanjungpinang, admitted he was hired by an individual identified as AR. RS was promised Rp24 million (approx. SGD 1,920) to transport the goods to Kalimantan Barat. Authorities are now investigating AR’s role as the intended recipient of the shipment.

Legal Process Underway
The case has been escalated to an investigation under Article 102 (f) of Law No. 17/2006 on Customs, which prohibits the illegal importation of goods. RS, the seized iPhones, and the vehicle used have all been secured as evidence. Customs is also pursuing further action against AR, who has been summoned for questioning.
Customs Commitment Against Smuggling
Head of Batam Customs, Zaky Firmansyah, emphasized the agency’s determination to curb illegal trade. “This action reflects our commitment to preventing smuggling that causes harm to the state. We also remind the public not to be tempted by offers to act as couriers, as the legal risks are severe,” he stated.
Broader Impact on Indonesia’s Trade Security
The incident highlights the vulnerability of Indonesia’s trade routes, particularly Batam, a known entry point for illicit electronics. With high consumer demand for used smartphones, smuggling attempts remain frequent, but decisive enforcement helps protect both legitimate businesses and national revenue.
