Indonesian investment body to launch joint philanthropy programs with Gates Foundation starting 2026

Indonesia’s Danantara Trust Fund is preparing a $100 million allocation to collaborate with Bill Gates’ Gates Foundation, targeting education, health, and clean water initiatives.

$100 Million Commitment

The Badan Pengelola Investasi Daya Anagata Nusantara (BPI Danantara) confirmed a landmark philanthropic initiative during the United Nations General Assembly in New York. CEO Rosan Roeslani announced that Danantara will allocate US$100 million (Rp1.67 trillion) to support programs in education, health, and water sanitation (WASH) under the Danantara Trust Fund.

Long-Term Partnership with Gates Foundation

The collaboration, described as a “philanthropy lab,” is being shaped through joint sessions with the Gates Foundation until January 2026. Following this period, both sides are expected to finalize concrete programs to address key social challenges across Indonesia.

Annual Dividend Allocation

Beyond the initial capital, Danantara pledged to contribute 1–2% of its annual dividends to the Trust Fund. This structure ensures a continuous stream of resources for empowerment programs, making the partnership not just a one-off donation but a sustainable commitment.

Support From the Indonesian Government

President Prabowo Subianto emphasized the significance of the cooperation, citing Health Minister Budi Gunadi Sadikin’s update that Gates Foundation assistance in health alone has already reached Rp7–8 trillion (approximately S$560–640 million). Broader impacts from these initiatives are estimated to generate benefits worth US$4.5 billion.

Building Indonesia as a Philanthropy Hub

Roeslani highlighted Danantara’s ambition to position Indonesia as a center for global philanthropy. Discussions are already underway with other international partners, signaling the country’s intent to expand its influence in development financing.

Regional and Global Impact

The partnership not only strengthens Indonesia’s social infrastructure but also resonates across Southeast Asia, including Singapore, where health, education, and water security are shared priorities. The initiative reflects a growing trend of public-private collaboration to tackle development challenges at scale.

Danantara’s collaboration with Bill Gates and the Gates Foundation marks a pivotal moment for Indonesia’s philanthropic landscape. With long-term funding mechanisms, government backing, and international credibility, the initiative has the potential to transform lives in education, healthcare, and clean water access while positioning Indonesia as a regional hub for philanthropy.
