Universiti Teknologi Malaysia rejects claims of bias, citing meritocracy, graduate employability, and global rankings

Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) has firmly dismissed allegations of discrimination against local students, calling the claims baseless and harmful to its reputation. The university stressed its commitment to meritocracy, balanced internationalisation, and producing competitive Malaysian graduates.

Allegations Spark University Response

The controversy began after a politician alleged that 1.9 million Malaysian graduates were underemployed and that 21% of student places in five public universities had been allocated to foreigners. He further claimed Chinese and Bangladeshi graduates benefited disproportionately from government work schemes.

UTM’s Clarification on International Students

In its official statement, UTM refuted these claims with data. International undergraduates accounted for only 7% of total enrollment in 2024, representing 56 different countries. Chinese students made up just 1.2% of undergraduates, far lower than alleged. The university emphasised that admissions at the Bachelor’s level continue to grow based on meritocratic and inclusive principles.

Graduate Employment and Market Relevance

UTM reported that its graduates achieved stipulated employment and marketability targets in both 2023 and 2024. The university highlighted that all academic programmes are designed with industry input and accredited by professional bodies, ensuring students are equipped with skills aligned to market needs.

Protecting Institutional Reputation

UTM expressed concern that negative narratives could harm its standing, particularly its 153rd position in the QS World University Rankings 2026. The university underscored that its strength lies in science, engineering, and technology education, where it has consistently produced highly employable graduates.

Commitment to National Progress

Founded to advance Malaysia’s scientific and technological capabilities, UTM reaffirmed its mission to nurture competitive local talent for national contribution. While welcoming international diversity, the institution stressed that its core focus remains on serving Malaysian students and preparing them for meaningful roles in the workforce.

The debate over local and foreign student placement underscores broader concerns about graduate employment in Malaysia. UTM’s response, backed by data and global recognition, reflects the importance of transparency in higher education. For Malaysians, the message is clear: the university remains rooted in meritocracy and committed to empowering national talent, while balancing international engagement.
