Singapore joins five other global circuits in hosting high-intensity sprint races under new F1 era.

Formula One has confirmed that Singapore will host a sprint race for the first time in 2026, adding extra excitement to the Marina Bay Street Circuit weekend from October 9 to 11. The announcement comes as F1 expands its sprint calendar to six venues worldwide, part of its push to deliver more action-packed race weekends.

Six Sprint Venues in 2026

Alongside Singapore, sprint races will be staged in Shanghai (March 13–15), Miami (May 1–3), Montreal (May 22–24), Silverstone (July 3–5), and Zandvoort (August 21–23). Silverstone, the birthplace of the sprint in 2021, returns after a five-year absence.

What is an F1 Sprint?

Introduced in 2021, sprint races cover 100km—roughly one-third of a Grand Prix distance—and last about 30 minutes. The format features:

  • One free practice session on Friday.
  • Sprint qualifying (SQ1, SQ2, SQ3) to set the grid.
  • A no-pit-stop 100km dash on Saturday, with eight points for the winner.

Traditional qualifying then follows on Saturday evening, setting the grid for Sunday’s main race.

Local and Fan Reactions

Jonathan Hallett, director of race promoter Singapore GP, said: “We are thrilled to be one of six circuits to host the F1 Sprint next year. With new regulations, a new team joining the grid, and the sprint format, fans can look forward to even more competitive racing.”

Local fans expressed mixed views. Tutor Jenson Lim, 38, welcomed the format: “It mixes things up and adds more pressure, with less practice time and more chances for errors.” But engineer James Koh, 31, was cautious, noting: “The Marina Bay Street Circuit is tight and narrow, which makes overtaking difficult, so I’m not sure how exciting a sprint will be here.”

Rising Popularity and Future Plans

F1 president Stefano Domenicali highlighted that sprints have boosted TV audiences by around 10% compared to non-sprint weekends. With discussions underway, the sprint roster could expand to as many as 12 events by 2027, with reverse grids being considered as a way to shake up competition.

Tickets and 2025 Preview

Tickets for the 2026 Singapore Grand Prix will be released in phases, limited to select categories. Before the sprint debut, fans can catch the 2025 edition from October 3 to 5, continuing the city-state’s reputation as one of F1’s most dramatic night races.

The debut of the sprint race at Singapore’s Marina Bay Street Circuit in 2026 signals a bold new chapter for the sport’s only full night race. While some question the format’s suitability on a tight street track, the event marks Singapore’s deeper integration into F1’s evolving future, promising heightened thrills for both local and international fans.
