Defence Minister Chan Chun Sing announces maritime patrol upgrade during US visit

Singapore will acquire four Boeing P-8A Poseidon maritime patrol aircraft to replace its ageing Fokker 50s, marking a significant step in strengthening the Republic’s maritime defence capabilities. The announcement came during Defence Minister Chan Chun Sing’s official visit to the United States.

Replacing an Ageing Fleet

The P-8A aircraft will replace the Republic of Singapore Air Force’s (RSAF) Fokker 50s, which have been in service since 1993. The purchase forms the first phase of Singapore’s broader maritime capability upgrade.

Advanced Maritime Capabilities

Based on the Boeing 737-800 airframe but heavily modified for military use, the P-8A can fly up to 41,000 feet at speeds of 490 knots. It is equipped with a weapons bay and can carry 129 sonobuoys for submarine detection, lightweight torpedoes, and maritime markers. The jets also provide anti-surface warfare capabilities and can support search-and-rescue missions.

Regional and Global Operators

The P-8A Poseidon is currently operated by nine countries, including the United States, United Kingdom, India, and South Korea. Singapore will join this select group, enhancing its interoperability with key defence partners in maritime security operations.

Defence Cooperation with the US

Defence Minister Chan announced the acquisition during talks with US Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth at the Pentagon on 10 September 2025. Both leaders reaffirmed the longstanding bilateral defence partnership, rooted in a 1990 Memorandum of Understanding renewed in 2019 by President Donald Trump and then-Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong.

Broader Military Modernisation

Chan also confirmed that production of Singapore’s 20 F-35 fighter jets has begun, with deliveries expected from late 2026. This acquisition will replace the RSAF’s F-16s, further modernising Singapore’s air capabilities alongside the new P-8As.

Strengthening Regional Security

Singapore’s defence upgrade comes amid heightened regional maritime security challenges. The acquisitions underscore the Republic’s commitment to safeguarding critical sea lanes and ensuring continued collaboration with international partners in the Asia-Pacific.

By acquiring Boeing P-8A Poseidon aircraft, Singapore is reinforcing its maritime surveillance and defence posture while deepening its strategic partnership with the United States. Together with the upcoming F-35 fleet, these moves signal Singapore’s determination to maintain technological edge and resilience in an increasingly complex security landscape.
