Final ultimatum ties hostages’ release to ceasefire talks as civilian toll climbs

Israel has issued a final warning to Hamas, threatening a “mighty hurricane” of intensified airstrikes and ground operations in Gaza City unless the militant group surrenders and releases its remaining 48 hostages. The ultimatum comes amid renewed U.S. mediation efforts and a worsening humanitarian crisis.

Israel’s Final Warning

On 8 September, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu urged Gaza residents to evacuate immediately, warning that Israel would escalate its offensive if Hamas refused to free the hostages captured during the 2023 cross-border assault. Defence Minister Israel Katz reinforced the threat on X, declaring: “Release the hostages and lay down your weapons — or Gaza will be destroyed.”

U.S. and Qatari Mediation

The ultimatum followed a U.S. ceasefire proposal delivered by President Donald Trump, described as Hamas’s “last chance.” The plan calls for Hamas to release all 48 living and deceased hostages on the first day of a truce, followed by negotiations. Qatar’s Prime Minister pressed Hamas leaders in Doha to respond positively, though Hamas officials described the offer as only “preliminary ideas.”

Escalation in Gaza City

Israeli forces have already demolished 50 so-called “terror towers” and struck a 12-storey residential block in Gaza City, hours after urging civilians to flee. The Israel Defense Forces said Hamas had been operating intelligence and explosives from the site. Residents reported intense bombardments and destroyed vehicles across city streets.

Rising Civilian and Journalist Deaths

Monday’s clashes left at least 40 Palestinians dead, including journalist Osama Balousha. According to Palestinian authorities, nearly 250 journalists have been killed during the conflict, making Gaza the deadliest war zone for media workers in recent history. The enclave’s health ministry also reported six new starvation-related deaths, raising the toll from malnutrition to at least 393.

Humanitarian Catastrophe

Since 2023, Israel’s military campaign has devastated Gaza, leaving more than 64,000 Palestinians dead, according to local health officials. Israel disputes the figures, claiming hunger deaths are overstated, but humanitarian groups warn that food, medical supplies, and shelter remain critically scarce.

Hostages and Stalemate

The war began with Hamas’s October 2023 assault that killed 1,200 Israelis and saw over 250 hostages taken into Gaza. While most hostages were freed in ceasefires in late 2023 and early 2025, Hamas has retained dozens as leverage. Israel insists on unconditional release and disarmament, while Hamas demands guarantees for Palestinian statehood before laying down arms.

The threat of a “mighty hurricane” marks a turning point in the Israel-Hamas conflict, intertwining military escalation with high-stakes diplomacy. As U.S. and Qatari mediators push for a breakthrough, the future of Gaza — already shattered by war and humanitarian collapse — hangs on whether hostages are released and whether either side can compromise on its core demands.
