ICA officers crossed into Johor with cake and 68 cupcakes for Merdeka
The Causeway turned into a bridge of friendship this week as Singapore’s Immigration and Checkpoints Authority (ICA) celebrated Malaysia’s 68th Independence Day with cake and cupcakes for their Malaysian counterparts.
A Bridge of Friendship
On August 30, commanders from Singapore’s ICA brought a large cake and 68 cupcakes to Johor Bahru’s Bangunan Sultan Iskandar (BSI) Customs, Immigration, and Quarantine complex. Each cupcake symbolized a year since Malaysia’s independence in 1957, turning a routine border crossing into a gesture of goodwill.
Symbolism in Celebration
The cupcakes, topped with the number “68,” were presented to Malaysia’s Border Control and Protection Agency (AKPS) and BSI staff. ICA later shared the moment on Facebook, highlighting its message: “We are thankful for the strong partnership as we work together to keep our borders secure. We look forward to continued collaboration and ensuring smooth trade and safe travels between our land borders.”

Reciprocal Acts of Goodwill
This exchange of cakes has become a growing tradition between the two neighbors. Earlier in August, Malaysian immigration officers had crossed into Singapore with a cake to mark the Republic’s 60th National Day on August 9. The back-and-forth gestures underline the warmth between frontline agencies that manage one of the busiest land crossings in the world.
Diplomatic Missions Join In
Singapore’s diplomatic missions in Malaysia also took part. The High Commission in Kuala Lumpur and Consulate-General in Johor Bahru handed over cupcakes adorned with Malaysian flags. They posted: “Our heartfelt greetings to our friends at BSI and KSAB on the occasion of Malaysia’s 68th Independence Day. May our friendship and cooperation continue to grow from strength to strength as we build an even brighter future together.”

More Than Just Cake
Beyond the sweetness, the exchanges symbolize strong bilateral cooperation. The Causeway is one of the busiest border crossings globally, with millions of people and goods moving between Singapore and Malaysia each month. These symbolic acts reinforce mutual trust in handling cross-border trade, tourism, and security challenges.
What may seem like simple cakes and cupcakes carries deeper meaning in strengthening ties between Singapore and Malaysia. For both nations—especially border communities—such gestures highlight that beyond politics and policy, goodwill and respect are essential in building enduring partnerships.
