Four-day state visit highlights deep-rooted bilateral relations and growing economic partnership.
The Sultan of Brunei, Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah, received a grand state welcome at Istana Negara on Aug 26, marking the start of his four-day state visit to Malaysia, which underscores the enduring ties between the two neighbours.
Royal Welcome at Istana Negara
Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah, accompanied by Prince ‘Abdul Mateen Bolkiah, was received by Malaysia’s King, Sultan Ibrahim, and Tunku Temenggong Johor Tunku Idris Iskandar. The ceremony included the national anthems of both countries, performed by the Royal Malay Regiment’s Central Band, followed by a 21-gun salute.
Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, Cabinet ministers, and senior government officials also attended the welcome. The King later hosted Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah and the Bruneian delegation at a State Banquet.
Strengthening Bilateral Cooperation
During their meeting, Sultan Ibrahim and Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah reaffirmed the longstanding friendship between Malaysia and Brunei. Both monarchs discussed ways to further deepen cooperation across political, economic, and cultural spheres.
This visit marks the third state visit received by Sultan Ibrahim since his accession as Malaysia’s 17th King, following earlier visits from the Presidents of China and Indonesia.
Focus on the Annual Leaders’ Consultation
On Aug. 27, the Brunei ruler will attend the 26th Malaysia-Brunei Annual Leaders’ Consultation (ALC), the highest bilateral mechanism between both nations. The ALC serves as a key platform for reviewing cooperation progress, addressing current issues, and exchanging views on regional and international matters.
Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah is also scheduled to hold a separate meeting with Prime Minister Anwar in conjunction with the ALC.
Economic Significance
Malaysia and Brunei continue to maintain strong economic ties. In 2024, Brunei was Malaysia’s sixth-largest trading partner within ASEAN, with trade reaching RM7.53 billion (US$1.77 billion).
From January to June 2025, bilateral trade amounted to US$690 million (RM3.02 billion), with Malaysia exporting US$500 million (RM2.18 billion) and importing US$190 million (RM840 million) from Brunei.
A Relationship Rooted in History
Both nations share cultural, historical, and geographic ties, reinforced by regular high-level exchanges such as the ALC. The state visit reaffirms their mutual commitment to stability, prosperity, and regional cooperation.
Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah’s state visit not only highlights the deep-rooted ties between Malaysia and Brunei but also signals both countries’ determination to expand cooperation in trade, governance, and regional stability.
