Ukrainian leader values Singapore’s friendship as ties deepen despite ongoing war with Russia.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy has expressed gratitude to Singapore’s President Tharman Shanmugaratnam for extending Independence Day wishes, highlighting the importance of bilateral friendship amid Ukraine’s war with Russia.
Singapore’s Message of Solidarity
On August 24, 2025, President Tharman sent a congratulatory letter to Zelenskiy on Ukraine’s 34th Independence Day. Conveyed through Singapore’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the message extended “heartfelt wishes for the continued peace, progress and prosperity” of Ukraine and its people.
Zelenskiy Responds with Appreciation
Taking to social media platform X on August 25, Zelenskiy thanked President Tharman for Singapore’s solidarity. He wrote, “Ukraine values this friendship and looks forward to further deepening our bilateral relations,” reinforcing Kyiv’s diplomatic outreach across Asia during wartime.
Strengthening Bilateral Relations
Zelenskiy’s remarks recalled his June 2024 visit to Singapore, where he met President Tharman and Prime Minister Lawrence Wong. During that trip, the leaders discussed sovereignty, territorial integrity, and global developments, underscoring shared concerns about stability in international affairs.
Air Services Agreement Signed
The visit also marked the signing of the Ukraine-Singapore Air Services Agreement, which could eventually expand connectivity between both nations. While Ukraine’s airspace remains closed to civilian flights due to safety concerns, the agreement signals long-term cooperation once conditions allow.

Independence Day Amid Conflict
Ukraine’s 34th Independence Day was commemorated under the shadow of a war with Russia that has lasted more than three-and-a-half years. Despite the conflict, Ukraine has continued strengthening diplomatic partnerships and securing international support.
Singapore’s Role in Global Diplomacy
Singapore’s message of support underscores its consistent foreign policy approach—standing for sovereignty and international law. This aligns with its broader diplomatic efforts to build balanced relations while supporting nations facing conflict.
The exchange between President Tharman and Zelenskiy illustrates the growing significance of Ukraine-Singapore relations. For both nations, the reaffirmed friendship not only strengthens diplomatic ties but also reflects shared values of sovereignty, peace, and resilience in uncertain global times.
