Father struck child who caused his daughter to fall, faces possible jail sentence
A 39-year-old Singaporean man pleaded guilty on August 20 to assaulting a six-year-old boy at a Jurong East mall playground. The incident, sparked by a dispute over styrofoam blocks, left the victim bruised and traumatised.
The Incident at Westgate
On December 22, 2024, the man brought his wife and three daughters to an indoor playground at Westgate shopping mall. A dispute arose after his three-year-old daughter knocked over a wall of styrofoam blocks built by a six-year-old boy. Upset, the boy later kicked another block wall, knowing she was standing behind it, causing her to fall.
Father’s Retaliation
Witnesses recounted how the father, visibly upset, confronted the child. In front of more than 20 people, he slapped the boy forcefully on the right cheek, leaving a bruise. The child immediately cried in fear.
Confrontation with the Boy’s Mother
After the slap, the man asked the boy to lead him to his mother. He told her about the fall but deliberately omitted the assault, reportedly using vulgarities during the exchange. Believing only her son’s misbehaviour was at fault, the mother instructed the boy to apologise.
Witness Reveals the Truth
A witness later informed the mother’s friend that the child had been slapped. The boy confirmed this when confronted again, still in tears. Police were alerted, and the man was arrested at around 4pm the same day.
Psychological Impact on Victim
The assault left a lasting impression on the six-year-old. For about a week, he became noticeably quieter and suffered occasional nightmares. While his bruise healed within days and his behaviour eventually returned to normal, prosecutors emphasised the unnecessary trauma caused by the incident.
Prosecution’s Call for Jail Time
Deputy Public Prosecutor Joelle Loy called the slap “completely unwarranted and inexcusable,” noting the stark size and age difference between the accused and the victim. The prosecution has sought a jail term of six to seven weeks. Sentencing is scheduled for September 16.
